Beyond his achievements as a founding member of the Byrds, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee Gene Clark was one of the most prolific singer-songwriters of the rock era. After his passing in 1991, fans began lobbying for the release of known studio recordings that had been locked away for decades. They eventually got their wish with the release of The Lost Studio Sessions: 1964-1982, a collection of rarities from the personal archives of the Byrds’ first manager, Jim Dickson. This title was released in several limited-edition formats in 2016 by Sierra Records. Mining this same cache of treasures, a six-song EP entitled Back Street Mirror followed in 2018 for Record Store Day.

Gene Clark, record business equals bad news. Case in point, this album. Or masterpiece, you could say. After two brilliant Dillard & Clark albums, A&M signed Clark to a solo deal. Okay, fair enough so far. In 1972, he delivered perhaps the finest album of his career, Gene Clark, (also known as White Light). Excellent reviews in all the top magazines, including Rolling Stone. Guess what? Almost zero sales. Now, here's the follow up, almost if not more brilliant. Released only in Holland.

Gene Clark was one of the founding fathers of America's answer to the Beatles: The Byrds. This solo album, generally known as White Light, was pronounced Album of the Year 1971 in the Netherlands by the best Dutch music magazine of those days and it took quite some time before it was rereleased on CD in a small production. This album is still quite rare, but a must if you like singer/songwriters, or are a Byrd-maniac.

When Leo Koster (Meppel, NL 1953) heard the first Byrds album in 1965 he was not so much impressed by their then familiar hitsongs, but mostly by the songs written and sung by Gene Clark, one of the founding members. It soon became clear that Gene Clark was a very original and prolific songwriter and a great singer who alas did not fit in with the great rock'n'roll machine. He stayed with the Byrds for just a year and a half and then went out on his own.

Though Clark didn't live to see it, No Other has attained cult status as a visionary recording that employs every available studio means to illustrate the power in Clark's mercurial songwriting. He and producer Thomas Jefferson Kaye entered Village Recorders in L.A. with an elite cast that included Michael Utley and Jesse Ed Davis, Butch Trucks, Lee Sklar, Russ Kunkel, Joe Lala, Chris Hillman, Danny "Kooch" Kortchmar, Howard Buzzy Feiten, and Stephen Bruton. Clark's vocalists included Clydie King, Venetta Fields, Shirley Matthews, the Eagles' Timothy B. Schmidt, and Claudia Lennear. These musicians all brought their best to the material. As a whole, No Other is a sprawling, ambitious work that seamlessly melds country, folk, jazz-inflected-gospel, urban blues, and breezy L.A. rock in a song cycle that reflects the mid-'70s better than anything from the time, yet continues to haunt the present with its relevance…

Gene Clark's 1971 platter, with its stark black cover featuring his silhouette illuminated by the sun, was dubbed White Light — though the words never appear on the cover — and if ever a title fit a record, it's this one. Over its nine original tracks, it has established itself as one of the greatest singer/songwriter albums ever made. After leaving the Byrds in 1966, recording with the Gosdin Brothers, and breaking up the Dillard and Clark group that was a pioneering country-rock outfit, Clark took time to hone his songwriting to its barest essentials. The focus on these tracks is intense, they are taut and reflect his growing obsession with country music.
