Sides is officially the third (but technically the fourth) solo album from former Genesis guitarist Anthony Phillips. It was released in 1979 by Passport Records. For a limited period it was sold bundled with a complimentary copy of his Private Parts and Pieces album. This album was produced by Rupert Hine and intended for a mainstream audience. On the original LP, side one showcased shorter pop songs, while side two highlighted longer, more progressive pieces. Genesis crew members Dan Owen and Dale Newman provide vocals on some tracks. Peter Cross did the artwork for the album.

To his credit, Steve Hackett learned from the mistakes made on Please Don't Touch, and delivered a much-improved mix of songs and instrumentals on 1975's Spectral Mornings. With a workable backing band that includes John Shearer, Nick Magnus, and former Decameron bassist Dik Cadbury, the ex-Genesis guitarist exploits his strengths: progressive instrumentals that skip between heaven and hell, pastoral pop songs, and a healthy dose of English humor…

The standard of musicianship is high; the compositions are classy with quality production, ranging through melodic, hook-laden songs with incredible anthemic choruses and gentle ballads, with plenty in the way of bombastic, complex arrangements with extended instrumental arrangements going on in-between.
