Based loosely on Homer's 'The Odyssey', the movie deals with the odd adventures of Everett Ulysses McGill and his companions Delmar and Pete during the 1930's in Mississippi. Broke free from a chain-gang and trying to reach Everett's home to recover some buried loot from a bank heist, they are confronted by a series of strange characters. Among them are sirens, a cyclops, a bankrobber named George 'Babyface' Nelson, a campaigning Governor, his opponent, a K.K.K. lynch mob, and a blind prophet who happens to give them a bit of mysterious, yet confusing, advice regarding their journey.

Michael Clayton (George Clooney) is an in-house "fixer" at one of the largest corporate law firms in New York. A former criminal prosecutor, Clayton takes care of Kenner, Bach & Ledeen's dirtiest work at the behest of the firm's co-founder Marty Bach (Sydney Pollack). Though burned out and hardly content with his job as a fixer, his divorce, a failed business venture and mounting debt have left Clayton inextricably tied to the firm. At U/North, meanwhile, the career of litigator Karen Crowder (Tilda Swinton) rests on the multi-million dollar settlement of a class action suit that Clayton's firm is leading to a seemingly successful conclusion. But when Kenner Bach's brilliant and guilt-ridden attorney Arthur Edens (Tom Wilkinson) sabotages the U/North case, Clayton faces the biggest challenge of his career and his life.

Il rentre chez lui à Georgetown pour écrire ses mémoires et noyer ses ennuis dans l'alcool - pas nécessairement dans cet ordre. Sa femme, Katie, est consternée, mais pas vraiment surprise. Elle a une liaison avec Harry Pfarrer, un marshal fédéral marié pour qui elle décide alors de quitter Cox.

Divorce attorney Miles Massey has everything, a jet, a jet washer, three gardeners (or "those little lawn people" as he puts it), and even a marriage contract (The Massey Prenup) named after him. He seems to be unstoppable and completely invincible. That is, until he meets the beautiful, dangerous Marylin Rexroth. After being completely destroyed in court, Marylin formulates a plan that puts Miles in a position where he doesn't know what to do. For the first time in his life, he doesn't have what he wants the most.
