“Nocturne Serenity” is a welcome return for saxophonist/composer Dale Fielder and his Quartet featuring pianist Jane Getz. It is their first recording since 2019’s “Consensus.” The recording is also subtitled “Saxophone Standards Volume 2,” a follow-up to 2013’s “Saxophone Standards Volume 1,” Fielder’s ongoing life-long project of exploring the American jazz standard tradition. Since 2002, Fielder has primarily played the baritone saxophone. Even though he is photographed on the cover holding a baritone sax, he plays no baritone sax on this recording. Here he plays a strong, impassioned tenor sax on four of the seven tunes; soprano and alto on the remaining three tunes.

Before his death after a several year battle with cancer, Stan Getz continued to release a flurry of outstanding recordings. Cafe Montmartre is a compilation of several live performances at the famous Copenhagen club with pianist Kenny Barron, selected from three earlier CDs, the 1987 quartet dates Anniversary! and Serenity, plus the two-disc set People Time from 1991. Getz was a masterful ballad interpreter and delivers with the mournful tribute "I Remember Clifford" and an absolutely haunting, emotionally charged take of Billy Strayhorn's "Blood Count" (written as its composer lay dying of cancer). Barron makes a strong case as one of Getz's very best accompanists, while bassist Rufus Reid and drummer Ben Riley (present only on the 1987 material), are also superb…

With 1992's "Midnight Sun", released on his own label, Herb Alpert indulges himself with vintage standards. A strong jazz feel imbues the relaxed atmosphere. The soloist's treatments of "All the Things You Are" create a cool and mellow version of the Hammerstein-Kern classic. Alpert reprises his 1965 hit, "A Taste of Honey", with a blue jazz feeling. After pop concerns dominating his work for the previous 30 years, it's refreshing to hear this album of timeless songs. „Midnight Sun“ is not so much concerned with finding a hit through today's trends but rediscovering an appreciation of the great music that's been forgotten.
