Giovanni Zarrella opens the doors to his "Universo": The German-Italian singer and entertainer announces his new album for April 25. In recent years, the 46-year-old has achieved pretty much everything in the German-speaking world: his last two albums reached number 1 in the German charts, and his "Die Giovanni Zarrella Show", which was launched in 2021, is now the biggest musical Saturday evening show on German television (ZDF). Last year, Zarrella also won the hearts of young audiences as a coach on "The Voice of Germany". Now he is releasing his fourth studio album. A step that takes the son of Italian immigrants back to his roots, both musically and biographically - to the heyday of Italo disco pop in the 80s. Songs such as "Fantastico", "Danza" and "Universo" radiate pure positive energy and absolute joie de vivre. "Fans can look forward to many more new songs that either go straight to the heart or to the legs," says a delighted Zarrella.

Giovanni Paisiello, whose works Mozart thought enough of to study closely, was mostly forgotten in the nineteenth century, and this "Passione de Gesù Cristo" remained buried until 1998. This is its second recording; a Polish version on the Arts label, from that year, is also available. The oratorio's text is by the preeminent operatic librettist of the eighteenth century, Pietro Metastasio. One can easily understand why the work has never had a critical mass of general listeners, but for those interested in Mozart's world it's truly fascinating. This passion story features neither Jesus nor Pontius Pilate, nor any of the other usual personages. Instead it takes place after Christ's crucifixion, recounted by St. John, Joseph of Arimatea, and Mary Magdalene (in surely her biggest part until "Jesus Christ Superstar" came along) to St. Peter, with the accompaniment of a chorus of Christ's other followers; in the second part, all bewail the corruption of Jerusalem and look forward to Christ's resurrection. – FANFARE: Colin Fleming

This ninth volume of the Haydn2032 series focuses on the composer’s psychological subtlety in its focus on a central work: his Symphony no.45, known as the ‘Abschieds-Symphonie’ (‘Farewell’ Symphony), composed in 1772. It is said to have got its nickname from a symbolic message Haydn conveyed to Prince Esterházy when he and his orchestra were required to stay longer than planned in the Prince’s summer residence. On the occasion of the symphony’s first performance, Haydn had arranged for the musicians to leave their places one by one during the final Adagio. The day after the concert, all the musicians were able to return to their families and bid farewell to the Prince, who had obviously taken the point of this poetic request for ‘liberation’ expressed in music. The programme is completed by Symphonies nos. 15 and 35 and a cantata sung by Sandrine Piau, the heart-rending ‘Berenice, che fai?’ on a text by Metastasio that was a real ‘hit’ of the eighteenth century, set by some forty composers.

The eleventh volume of the complete HAYDN2032 symphony cycle moves its focus to Paris: ‘Every day one perceives more clearly, and consequently admires more, the productions of this great genius, who, in every one of his works, knows so well how to draw rich and varied developments from a single subject’, wrote the Mercure de France in April 1788, adding that Haydn was ‘quite different from those sterile composers who constantly move from one idea to another’. The symphonies presented here are no.2 (the first to be published in France), no.24 (the first to be performed there) and the so-called ‘Paris’ symphonies nos. 87 and 82 ‘L’Ours’, with its references to fairground atmosphere and its famous contredanse finale.

Schubert had been dead for seven years when, in 1838, the 27-year-old Liszt returned to Vienna for the first time since his childhood, when he had been taken to see Beethoven by his teacher Czerny an, perhaps apocryphally, been blessed by a kiss from the old man.

The harpsichord by Thomas Culliford (Longman & Broderip) from 1785 is one of the very few remaining English harpsichords in Italy. It is the only harpsichord by Culliford with a single manual, with its original registers and jacks and especially with its unchanged Machine stop. The restoration included a thorough cleaning and consolidation of unglued components, especially the cleaning of the soundboard and the consolidation of the inlay work on the front board. Some of the strings which were identified as being original were carefully documented and examined.
