Rough Trade's story began in 1976 with a shop in Notting Hill, branching out within a couple years to become a label and a distributor. Beginning with Pere Ubu and concluding with Tindersticks, Rough Trade Shops: 25 Years chronologically distills the history of the pioneering independent outlet into four discs and 56 tracks, concentrating on old and new favorites that have graced the shop's new release racks. Just about every style associated with U.K.-based independent and underground music between 1975 and 2000 is accounted for. (…) But quite successfully, 25 Years provides a fantastic skip through Rough Trade's existence. Many great artists have Rough Trade to thank for bin space, recording costs, and retail distribution. Here's hoping for 25 more years – and here's hoping that they're less turbulent financially.

Tarkio 2 albums  Music

Tarkio - Omnibus (2006)
VBR (220 kbps av) mp3 | 165 Mb | Tarkio - 1998 Live at KGBA | 192 kbps mp3 | 75 Mb
Genre: alt country/indie rock

Anyone who likes or loves the early R.E.M. shouldn't miss Tarkio. Cause at times they even outplay and outsing their more famous brothers of American guitar rock. Tarkio was the first band of Colin Meloy, who later came to fame with his follow-up band The Decemberists. Like most alt country and American guitar bands Tarkio follows the path that was opened by The Byrds, further explored by Tom Petty and later inspired Paisley Underground bands like Green on Red, The Long Ryders or Guadalcanal Diary and most of nowadays alt country bands. Tarkio means great songs, great singing and great playing. Omnibus is a 2006 reissue of the EP and CD Tarkio recorded in the second half of the 90's. One song that is a bit out of line with the rest of the material, Never Will Marry, even gives an answer to those who wonder what The Everly Brothers would have sounded like if they had been born 40 years later. The 1998 KGBA radio recording shows the band live in its full glory. Wish I had been in that studio.

It's rare that a band's debut album sounds as confident and self-assured as Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever's Hope Downs. To say that the first full-length from the Melbourne quintet improves on their buzz-building EPs from the last few years would be an understatement: the promise those early releases hinted at is fully realized here, with ten songs of urgent, passionate guitar pop that elicit warm memories of bands past, from the Go-Betweens' jangle to the charmingly lo-fi trappings of New Zealand's Flying Nun label. But don't mistake Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever for nostalgists: Hope Downs is the sound of a band finding its own collective voice. The hard-hitting debut album is a testament to Rolling Blackouts C.F.’s tight-knit and hard-working bonafides.

Memphis Horns, "Get Up And Dance"(1977)  Music

The Memphis Horns are the quintessential Memphis music combination - Andrew Love, tall, black and as mellow as one of his tenor solos; Wayne Jackson, short, white and as intense as one of his trumpet blasts. Together they were reared in all that Memphis music had to offer. Wayne got his start across the River in his hometown of West Memphis, Arkansas, strumming the guitar and singing in childhood talent shows. Andrew began his career playing “Amazing Grace” in Memphis’ Mt. Nebo Baptist Church, where his father, Roy, was the preacher. Wayne took up trumpet after his mother gave him one at age 11 and began playing in the junior and senior high school school bands. From there, the two future partners’ lives moved along parallel lines.

For more than four decades, Robert Forster's strengths have remained consistent, even as his style has subtly evolved. Vocal melodies always form the center of his songs, which often start with a simple, near-spoken line and organically resolve. The initial sparseness accents rhythm over melody and hints at Forster's emergence as a songwriter during the punk era. Forster's talent as a vocalist similarly aligns. While he often relies on an understated deadpan, he's able to express a full spectrum of feelings. Opener "Tell it Back to Me" is a sincere story where "we kissed on a bench." After a neutral beginning, Forster's delivery in "Such a Shame" gradually expresses the gruff disappointment of its title. "All of the Time" moves from its stolid opening line, "there's propaganda, and there's truth," to a furtive whisper in the third verse, to vulnerable and sweet wordless singing in the coda. "Foolish I Know" returns his jaded bluntness to the foreground, with lines like, "he's handsome and he's unattached."

After releasing a brilliant single by the Apartments on their Able label in 1979, the Go-Betweens almost added the band's leader Peter Milton Walsh to their lineup, but ultimately it didn't work out. "Walsh is night," said Grant McLennan. "We are day," added Robert Forster. After some more false starts, Walsh re-formed the Apartments and set about proving the duo right. Signed to Rough Trade after impressing them with a demo, the Apartments' debut album from 1985, The Evening Visits…and Stays for Years is a dark, brooding affair that features Walsh's idiosyncratic vocals and lyrics that hint at major emotional upheavals, or at least some very deep feels. Walsh's biting croon is balanced by layers of jangling acoustic and electric guitars and the occasional strings and horns, with a production style that calls to mind that of his former mate's concurrent work

In his notes for this passionately compiled box, producer Gary Stewart writes, "the diversity from the late-70s punk/new wave scene turned into a full-blown, variety-fueled, genre-busting orgy in the '80s…The music became, in the best sense of the words, more complex, more literate, a bit more serious, and as a result, made astrong impact on mainsteam rock culture." From funk punk to revisionist roots rock to hard-core to smart-ass clever pop-and every musical nook and cranny in-between-Left of the Dial presents many of the '80s' most important tracks. Savor the far more influential flip side of the "Where's the Beef?" decade's musical output!

Much like the band name anagram that provides its title, High-tails' debut album "A Slight Hi" is a consciously coltish set of shapeshifting guitar-pop, frisky dance-funk and whimsical wordplay. It's the sound of four Wagga-via-Sydney boys having the time of their lives, and you're invited - "A Slight Hi" is a gregarious how-do that'll put a smile on your dial, a wriggle in your hips, and some songs in your heart all at the same time.
