Chuck Berry is perhaps the defining musician of the early rock & roll era, the one figure responsible for the music's sound, style, and sensibility that created the blueprint for the generations that followed. A guitarist who wanted to play like T-Bone Walker and croon like Nat King Cole, Berry married these two styles to a swinging beat that spliced jump blues with juke joint R&B and hillbilly boogie–a blend that arrived nearly fully realized with his 1955 debut single "Maybellene," a record that topped the R&B charts and crashed into the pop Top Ten. Berry quickly followed "Maybellene" with a series of fleet-fingered, quick-witted singles like "Roll Over Beethoven," "School Day," "Sweet Little Sixteen" and "Johnny B. Goode" that constitute one of the richest and deepest American songbooks of the 20th Century, a collection of tunes that capture the exuberance of post-war popular culture, a period filled with automobiles, teenagers and rock & roll music.

Supposedly recorded live at the Tivoli Theater in Chicago, this album sounds suspiciously like studio recordings with lots of applause and screaming added, the whole suffering from inferior sound due to the overdubbing. The Chuck Berry hits are better heard in their original studio versions.

One of the most important pioneers of rock & roll, Chuck Berry (1926-2017) combined blues, country, and a witty, defiant teen outlook into songs that have influenced virtually every rock musician in his wake.Berry was among the first musicians to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on its opening in 1986, and is included in several of Rolling Stone magazine’s “greatest of all time” lists. He was ranked fifth on its 2004 list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.

This second volume of producer Steve Hoffman's discoveries in the Chess Records vaults features some less-prominent Chuck Berry tunes, again in the form of demos, unreleased alternate takes, and stereo remixes. Listeners are getting into collector territory here, but there are still some enjoyable examples of the Berry repertoire.

On the 1961 single "Go Go Go," a side that went nowhere on the charts, Chuck Berry sang that he was "Mixing Ahmad Jamal in my 'Johnny B. Goode'/Sneaking Erroll Garner in my 'Sweet Sixteen'/Now they tell me Stan Kenton is cutting 'Maybellene'" – as always, Chuck is stretching the truth to fit his story.

'As Rock 'n' Roll's great modernizer when the Fifties turned into the Sixties, Chuck Berry was one of the most influential musicians in 20th century American pop. His compositions have been played by the greatest, from Count Basie to The Beatles, and are today so famous that people forget that Chuck's originals were the greatest… Here, compiled by Bruno Blum, are Berry's indispensable songs from 1954 to 1961.
