Good in a Room

You can hear it in the opening bars of the opening number. It’s the sound of a real singer, in a proper recording studio taking on the blues and winning hands down. It may be something in the air in Cosmos Studios beautiful live room, but it is definitely something in the voice of twenty one year old Jasmine Kara. Of Swedish and Iranian descent, with a sultry beauty that belies the strength of her voice and an ability to bare her soul. It could be that her time in New York helped her lift her game, gave her a steely determination to make the music that she wanted to, and an idea on how to do it, but a talent like this was always likely to shine through. The Tri-Sound label have taken this talent and given it the setting in which to shine and ‘Blues Ain’t Nothing But A Good Woman Gone Bad’ is the result.

It is 1971, and journalist Raoul Duke barrels toward Las Vegas - accompanied by a trunkful of contraband and his slightly unhinged Samoan attorney, Dr. Gonzo - to cover a motorcycle race. What should be a cut-and-dried journalistic assignment quickly descends into a feverish psychedelic odyssey. Director Terry Gilliam and an all-star cast headlined by Johnny Depp and Benicio Del Toro show no mercy in bringing Hunter S. Thompson’s excoriating dissection of the American way of life to the screen, creating a film both hilarious and savage.

To the annoyance of her cat a kindly witch allows a dog,a bird and a frog who have helped her retrieve things she has lost to ride on her broomstick,making it top heavy. The broom is destroyed by a fire-breathing dragon who threatens to eat the witch but the creatures band together to impersonate a monster and save her. As a result she fashions a luxurious new broom with seats on which they can all ride comfortably.

So the setting for the Epic Fest was outdoors on the massive grounds of Sharkeys B&G with a huge festival stage built with accompanying live sound system. It was a surreal setting. An old cabin cruiser boat sat near the stage with a gaping hole in the bow. Next to it were hundreds of empty childrens school chairs, just set out in the field in all forms of random positions. Quite strange. I have some photos somewhere. Epic Fest is mostly a Prog Festival, with some great bands, one whose name I can’t recall, were playing Zappa music, and they sounded great. Leonardo presented the debut of the PAKT t-shirt on this gig. It was good to be here.
