Reissue with the latest DSD remastering. This album from 1976 is widely considered as one of the best, if not THE best, four-beat jazz albums by Sadao Watanabe, the legendary Japanese saxophonist. Watanabe went to New York, met with the original Great Jazz Trio – Hank Jones, Ron Carter and Tony Williams – before the super-group became well-known for its superb recordings.

Hank Jones is one of the most gifted jazz pianists of the second half of the 20th century, and this salute to Duke Ellington is only slightly blemished by the sometimes overbearing string arrangements by Masahiko Satoh. His trio, with bassist Eddie Gomez and drummer Jimmy Cobb, sticks to familiar selections from the vast Ellington songbook, with Jones occasionally switching to a Fender Rhodes electric piano or celeste. Happily the strings are omitted from cookers such as "C Jam Blues" and "Take the 'A' Train." Worth searching for.

Hank Jones, who has just turned 90, is still wowing audiences around the world with his elegant swing and "magic touch". The tradition of combining Hank Jones with an unexpected rhythm section continues in this wonderfully recorded hybrid SACD. The latest iteration of Jones' Great Jazz Trio includes veteran bassist George Mraz and explosive Billy Kilson who represents a new generation of jazz drummers. His sharp and powerful drumming is surely one of the highlights of this album.

On May 12 and 13 in 2002, Elvin Jones recorded his last album with his older brother Hank along with bassist Richard Davis as The Great Jazz Trio. Hank Jones wrote liner notes for Collaboration entitled "Elvin, my brother." An excerpt: "They say, ‘The Good Die Young.’ I Agree. Thad and Elvin did. They dedicated their lives to what they loved and believed in, even if that meant shortening their lives. As a family member, I sometimes wonder if we could have done less and stayed together as a family longer. On the other hand, I wholeheartedly respect Elvin’s desire to live out his life (playing). Today’s music world would not exist without him. The fact that he was a great drummer who influenced all those who came after him will forever remain in records and people’s memories".

Originally conceived by a Japanese record label, The Great Jazz Trio began with Hank Jones, Ron Carter and Tony Williams 30 years ago. Throughout many iterations, Jones has remained as a constant, as well as the concept of pairing the veteran pianist with the most exciting rhythm section of the day. In 2005, at age 86, Jones found himself in the company of another GREAT rhythm section: John Patitucci on bass and Jack DeJohnette on drums. Though certainly younger than Jones, they are both veterans who have established themselves firmly as superb musicians and masters of their respective instruments.

The name of the group might be immodest, but the combination of pianist Hank Jones, bassist Buster Williams and drummer Tony Williams lives up to its billing. Originally cut for the Japanese East Wind label and last available domestically as an Inner City LP, this swinging but unsurprising session features boppish interpretations of six jazz standards including "Love for Sale," "Secret Love," and "Autumn Leaves."

The last recording of Hank Jones!
It is only fitting that jazz giant Hank Jones' last recording was made in Japan. The Japanese people loved him and he loved them back. He toured Japan numerous times and made many recordings for Japanese labels. This recording was made in Tokyo on February 24, less than three months before his passing on May 16, 2010.
Produced by Yasohachi "88" Itoh, who produced and released the first recording of the Great Jazz Trio with Jones, Ron Carter and Tony Williams back in 1975…
