This lively Impulse! set was the first recorded reunion of trombonists J.J. Johnson and Kai Winding. With pianist Bill Evans, either Paul Chambers or Tommy Williams on bass, and Roy Haynes or Art Taylor on drums, the two trombonists are in melodic and witty form on such tunes as "This Could Be the Start of Something Big," "Blue Monk," "Side by Side," and "Theme from Picnic."

In 'Songs from the Planet of Life,' composer Helge Iberg uses poems of the taoist tradition to shed light on the ecological situation. An impressive handful of soloists come together with The Norwegian Radio Orchestra for this touching musical reflection on the present state of the planet and humankind. Norway's biggest newspaper Aftenposten, describes the work as "Heavenly! Iberg's concept gave us a night we will never forget!" An all-night Concerto Grosso for five soloists, narrator and symphony orchestra; extensive, grand-scale and correspondingly powerful a new Das Lied von der Erde inspired by Gustav Mahler's iconic art piece. The piece consists of 9 movements. Vocal artist Sidsel Endresen narrates the poems together with LiuTiegang, actor and leader of The National Theater of China in Beijing. Elise Batnes's interpretation of Tale of Sorrowful Song is outstanding. Christian Ihle Hadland's piano-playing is equally poignant in Lotus Dance, while Marianne Beate Kielland and Frank Havroy spellbind us in Long Autumn Night contrasted by Tom Ottar Andreassen's alto flute, all safely guided by conductor Kai Grinde Myrann.

One of the finest trombonists to emerge from the bebop era, Kai Winding was always to an extent overshadowed by J.J. Johnson, although they co-led one of the most popular jazz groups of the mid-'50s. Born in Denmark, Winding emigrated to the U.S. with his family when he was 12. He had short stints with the orchestras of Alvino Rey and Sonny Dunham, and played in a service band in the Coast Guard for three years. Winding's first burst of fame occurred during his year with Stan Kenton's Orchestra (1946-1947), during which his phrasing influenced and was adopted by the other trombonists, leading to a permanent change in the Kenton sound. He also participated in some early bop sessions, played with Tadd Dameron (1948-1949), and was on one of the Miles Davis' nonet's famous recording sessions…

Three pianist-composers from the first half of the last century form the programme for Joseph Moog’s new album. For this recording he is partnered by pianist Kai Adomeit in three works for two pianos – Rachmaninoff’s late Symphonic Dances from 1940, York Bowen’s Theme & Variations from 1951, and Rachmaninoff’s friend and compatriot Medtner’s Two Pieces. York Bowen had many Rachmaninoff works in his extensive concert repertoire, and he became known without much justification as ‘The English Rachmaninoff’. However strange that may sound, he like the two Russians on this recording represent (with Prokofiev) the last of the great pianist composers of the 20th century.

Franz Schubert (1797-1828) was basically a singer-songwriter. Only he left the writing to others. During the day, Schubert composed songs. In the evening he sang them to his friends, sometimes accompanying himself on the piano. From time to time, the great Viennese Mozart singer Johann Michael Vogl was a guest at the salons called "Schubertiads" and took over the singing part. Over wine and cigars. Not always great art. Rather: eternal melodies. In the 31 years of his life, Schubert wrote about 600 songs - and in these he seems to speak directly to us. The undisguised voice of a human being. Perhaps hoarse. Harassed by everyday life. With little feedback from the large community - and disappointed by many a swarm.

A great pairing of sides by two of the fifties greatest trombone acts! JJ Johnson and Kai Winding are on one side, with a boppish set of tunes, and Bennie Green's on the other, with a tight string ensemble. The music holds little surprises, but there's some nice takes on standards and of course, loads of great trombone.

J.J. Johnson, along with Bennie Green, was a founding father of bop trombone; Willie Dennis's promising career was cut short by an early death; "Jay and Kai" had successfully collaborated on several projects in the Fifties. But the unique and legendary meeting of these trombone giants, which first appeared on the Debut label and is reissued here, was unprecedented in jazz. Almost as remarkable is the rhythm section on this CD, with John Lewis making a rare appearance outside the Modern Jazz Quartet.

This debut recording by the auspicious Japanese pianist Satoko Inoue is doubly so because of its program: eight works by Japanese composers. Inoue is well-known for a repertoire of 20th century classical music by composers as diverse as Feldman, Cage, Varese, Debussy, and Ives. To choose for her debut recording the works of Japanese composers as diverse as Toru Takemitsu, Jo Kondo, Mamorou Fujieda, Sesshu Kai, and the father of all Nippon composers from the last century, Yoritsune Matsudaira. Given the difference between pre- and post-World War II Japan, it is of no surprise that the stylistic differences between composers born before and after the war would be great. All of them hold within them, however, one distinct quality: to offer the emotional essence of the object considered. Inoue wisely structures her program to convey the essentialist nature of all the works she performs.
