To anthologize the often overshadowed solo career of Brother Gregg Allman, Capricorn Records released this luscious, 34-track, 2CD collection in 1997 entitled One More Try: An Anthology. But, instead of packing it with “hits,” someone got the bright idea to stuff it full of demos, band rehearsals and 26 previously unreleased recordings. Which is very cool for fans and collectors. So… is there a buzz killer here, you ask? Of course. Just two years later, Capricorn unceremoniously deleted the collection. Maybe the bean counters were bummed at the lack of radio-worn favorites, or Capricorn thought a by-the-book Best Of would sell better. Perhaps Allman himself just changed his mind about having it out there. Who knows? But what got overlooked is that One More Try: An Anthology might be the single most interesting release in Allman’s solo catalog. The recordings often showcase Gregg alone on acoustic guitar. Some are live band rehearsals. Even the Allman Brothers Band staple, “Wasted Words,” appears here as a loose studio jam featuring Johnny Winter, Buddy Miles and the late Berry Oakley. Polished or not… profitable or not… perhaps this is the best way Gregg Allman deserves to be heard, by himself or just casually jamming with friends.

All My Friends showcases this show in double-CD/single-DVD and, in light of the subsequent announcement that the Allman Brothers Band would retire at the end of 2014 in the wake of the twin departures of Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks, it gains a certain sense of poignancy…

Duane and Gregg Allman found themselves in a host of other projects before the famed Allman Brothers Band began their ascent to success. This release is an album-length demo recording of a Tallahassee-basked folk rock band the 31st of February, which featured Duane Allman on guitar and Gregg Allman on vocals. While the 31st of February would eventually disband, this record is a rare insight into the early days of the Allmans and features the first ever recording of the song "Melissa".

The Gregg Allman Tour is the first live album by Gregg Allman, released in 1974. It was recorded at Carnegie Hall and Capitol Theatre. It peaked at number 50 on the Billboard Pop Albums charts in 1974. It was originally released as a double LP. For this concert, Allman was backed by the band Cowboy, who played two of their own songs. Cowboy was a Capricorn Records label-mate and was Duane Allman's favorite band. Several of its members had already backed Gregg Allman on his debut album the previous year.

Gregg Diamond was an accomplished songwriter, piano player, drummer and producer. Based in New York, Gregg emerged in the mid-70's as a producer, initially on the jazz fusion scene with artists including Impact Of Brass on albums including 'IOB' (1977) for Polydor. During the disco era of the late 70's he produced albums for his groups Star Cruiser and Bionic Boogie. 'Gregg Diamond's Star Cruiser' delivered 'Star Cruiser', including 'Starcruisin' and 'Holding Back' for the Miami-based Marlin label (via TK) in 1978.
The same year 'Gregg Diamond's Bionic Boogie' delivered 'Hot Butterfly', featuring Luther Vandross as lead vocalist on the title song and 'Cream (Always Rises To the Top)'. 'Hot Butterfly' was written by Gregg and later recorded by Chaka Khan on 'Naughty'. Gregg stayed at Polydor for two further albums, 'Tiger Tiger' (1979) and 'Hardware' (1979). Gregg also wrote songs for Andrea True Connection, Gloria Gaynor and worked with James Brown.
Sadly, Gregg died from gastrointestinal bleeding in 1999.

Gregg Allman's most visible contribution to rock music was as lead singer, organist, and songwriter with the Allman Brothers Band, founded by his brother Duane in 1969. He never threatened to eclipse the band that carried his family name, but he found occasional success and popularity with his solo work, which was distinctly different, more soulful, and less focused on high-wattage virtuosity. Allman's instrument was the organ, and he was most effective, when in top form, as a singer. His first instrument, ironically enough, was the guitar, and he took it up before his older brother Duane did.

Recorded in the same year as the Brothers and Sisters album, this solo debut release is a beautiful amalgam of R&B, folk, and gospel sounds, with the best singing on any of Gregg Allman's solo releases. He covers his own "Midnight Rider" in a more mournful, dirge-like manner, and Jackson Browne's "These Days" gets its most touching and tragic-sounding rendition as well. Although Chuck Leavell and Jaimoe are here, there's very little that sounds like the Allman Brothers Band - prominent guitars, apart from a few licks by Tommy Talton (Cowboy, ex-We the People), are overlooked in favor of gospel-tinged organ and choruses behind Allman's soulful singing.
