Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s Romancero Gitano for mixed choir and guitar sets some of Federico García Lorca’s most evocative and intimate Andalusian poetry. Marked by dramatic contrasts the music fuses colouristic ideas with rich polyphonic writing – performed here in an accurate critical edition. Corrado Margutti’s Rivers, designed to accompany Romancero Gitano, is a kaleidoscope of forms, styles and images that pays homage to Castelnuovo-Tedesco as well as encoding hidden references to other musical luminaries, forming a musical journey through time and space.

Duarte’s Partita was completed in 1974. It’s a substantial work in four movements, using all original material. As in the Variations on a Theme of Štěpán Rak he adopts a four-note motif, which may be heard forwards, backwards, inverted and stretched. Variations on an Italian Folk Song Op.139 was written in 2000.

AVID are pleased to present a long overdue second release from legendary jazz guitar great Mr. Wes Montgomery. On this set you will find Wes in the company of his brothers Buddy and Monk for the hard to find “live” classic “The Montgomery Brothers In Canada” plus a wonderful pairing of Wes with Milt Jackson for “Bags Meets Wes!” and then we feature a couple of albums recorded under his own name, the brilliant “So Much Guitar!” and the equally brilliant live set “Full House”. The original sales notes for our first Montgomery set (AMSC1027) describe how label owner Orrin Keepnews was urged by Cannonball Adderley and a review by composer, musician and critic Gunther Schuller to check out an “extraordinarily spectacular… unbearably exciting” young guitarist by the name of Wes Montgomery. Listen for yourself and you will discover that their enthusiasm was well founded! We also discovered that Wes’s self-taught style had much in common with that of John Coltrane and Sonny Rollins in that instead of the flowing style of a Charlie Christian his was of a more jabbing, fierce intensity, attacking the instrument in the same way the two saxophonists attacked their horns.

The three Suites recorded on this CD (BWV 1007, BWV 1008 and BWV 1010) were transcribed for guitar by the performers themselves, following a practice customary for Bach and absolutely familiar to him (the Fifth Suite for cello has come down to us in two versions, one for cello and one for lute: we are not sure which came first). One should therefore recognise the full aesthetic legitimacy of the guitar transcription of these compositions, a practice, moreover, that has now been established for decades.

And we're certainly glad he did! We're confident you're familiar with the tremendous impact of songwriter and lyricist Robert Hunter's work with the Grateful Dead. He may have been the sixth member unseen, but his contribution to their songs stands testament to their everlasting effect on generations of Dead Heads.

All the works are first world recordings. The flute and guitar duo couldn’t be missed in our collection of duos with guitar. Here we present a very special and unusual programme. Music by Von Call. Including three arrangements from the Opera theatre of the time. Virtuoso style music fantastically played by the German flutist Sabine Dreier. We also include a beautiful encore piece by French composer Jacques Rode. A Polonaise that shows the great quality of Rode’s music.

Carles Trepat (born 1960) is a Spanish classical guitarist. He has won several international prizes, including the "Premio Tárrega" in the "Certamen Internacional Francisco Tárrega de Benicàssim". In July 2014, he was awarded with the "Honorific Prize José Tomás" in Petrer.
