Colombia’s thriving cultural heritage derives from Spanish, African and Amerindian elements. The rich blend of colour and rhythmic vitality found in the synthesis of dance forms and styles, notably the sharply accented Andean bambuco (‘pursuit dance’), the flowing, graceful pasillo and the traditional, rhythmic guabina, recurs throughout this programme. Poignant expressiveness and intricate virtuosity are features of Montaña’s two Suites. Saboya’s Suite Ernestina includes characteristically South American melodies and rhythms, while Caribbean rhythmic patterns are recreated in González’s Preludio.

Li Jie (born 1981) is a Chinese classical guitarist. She began studying the classical guitar at the age of 11 (Chinese age) under Professor Chen Zhi. One year later, she appeared as a performer on the television program "Classical Guitar's Technique and Performance" of China's official national television station CCTV. In 1995, she enrolled into the Middle School (high school) of the prestigious Central Conservatory of Music (CCM) in China. In 2000, she was admitted to the CCM.

Deaf School are an English rock band, formed in the mid 1970s and hailing from Liverpool. Their style is somewhere in between pub rock, punk, glam rock and art rock. The journalist, author and founder of Mojo, Paul Du Noyer, described them thus: "In the whole history of Liverpool music two bands matter most, one is The Beatles and the other is Deaf School. If that seems like a sweeping statement then consider this: after the pop revolution of the 1960s led by The Beatles and other Merseyside groups, it looked as if the city's music scene had dried up forever. But in 1975 there came a motley band of Liverpool art students called Deaf School…"

Josh Clayton-Felt was one of the many fantastic songwriters that emerged in the early '90s with a hot debut album that was quickly forgotten about when grunge arrived. Although School of Fish had a minor hit with the rolling "3 Strange Days," there were several equally great songs on the album that should have made a dent.
