The soundtrack to Woody Allen's 2011 Oscar-nominated romantic comedy Midnight in Paris features a variety of jazz tunes and popular songs that are all generally associated with the film's 1920s Paris setting. While Allen actually transports his movie's main character back to the '20s, most of the music here was recorded by contemporary artists who play in an old-school style. To these ends, we get such roiling and urbane Gypsy jazz tracks as Swing 41's "Je Suis Seul Ce Soir," Original Paris Swing's "Recado," and even several Cole Porter vocal numbers by Conal Fowkes – who appears as Porter in the film. Also featured are jaunty classic jazz cuts like Josephine Baker's conga dance number "La Conga Blicoti" and, of course, Sydney Bechet's "Si Tu Vois Ma Mère," which opens the film. Swooning and romantic in tone with a breezy, swinging jazz vibe throughout, the Midnight in Paris soundtrack is a must-have souvenir for traditional jazz lovers and any fan of the film.

Cardboard sleeve reissue with DSD mastering. Five bonus tracks. Rare and groovy work by Barney Kessel – originally recorded for a strange subsidiary of Phil Spector's record label! The album's quite different than some of Kessel's other albums of the earlier years – recorded live with a gritty feel that's really nice – a bit more edge on the strings of the guitar, and a rumbling tone that's a far cry from his lighter work for Contemporary in the 50s. Kessel still retains much of his ability to produce a bell-like tone on the guitar – but he rings out with a tremendous amount of force – spurred on by the crackling club rhythm section of Jerry Scheff on bass and Frank Capp on drums. Titles include 2 great originals – "Slow Burn" and "Sweet Baby" – plus an excellent version of "Recado Bossa Nova", and the tunes "The Shadow Of Your Smile", "Just In Time", and "One Mint Julep". CD features five bonus tracks – including 'Fly Me To The Moon", "The Gypsy In My Soul", and "April In Paris".

Many contemporary big bands are all about "breaking new ground" and "exploring new pathways." Not this one. Ace clarinetist Ken Peplowski, who has performed and recorded with myriad large ensembles, at home and abroad, but has seldom led one—although he did record one other big-band album, Last Swing of the Century (Concord Jazz, 1999)—simply wants to make beautiful music, a goal he and his hand-picked corps of merry men (and one woman) easily reach on Sunrise, as they glide smoothly through a dozen numbers gleaned from the Great American Songbook and elsewhere.

Born Anita Belle Colton in Chicago, Illinois on October 18, 1919. Anita died on Thanksgiving morning November 23, 2006. O’Day got her start as a teen. She eventually changed her name to O’Day and in the late 1930’s began singing in a jazz club called the Off- Beat, a popular hangout for musicians like band leader and drummer Gene Krupa. In 1941 she joined Krupa’s band, and a few weeks later Krupa hired trumpeter Roy Eldridge. O’Day and Eldridge had great chemistry on stage and their duet “Let Me Off Uptown” became a million-dollar-seller, boosting the popularity of the Krupa band. Also that year, “Down Beat” magazine named O’Day “New Star of the Year” and, in 1942, she was selected as one of the top five big band singers.

R.I.P. Mr. Quincy Delight Jones Jr. (March 14, 1933 – November 3, 2024)

The music made by Quincy Jones during the second half 1950s was a stunning example of contemporary jazz during that pivotal decade for the form. Listening back today to these groundbreaking records delightfully illustrate how the dynamic musician, performer, composer and arranger first introduced his extraordinary skills to the world. After spending the first half of the decade working for other musicians, including a number of freelance commissions arranging songs for renowned artists such as Dinah Washington, Duke Ellington, and his close friend Ray Charles, Jones soon decided it was time for him to take the lead. The first album release to feature Quincy as a named artist was the 1955 release on Mercury Records 'Jazz Abroad' on which he featured alongside jazz drummer Roy Haynes. Next up was, 'That's How I feel About Jazz' featuring an all star cast including Art Farmer, Lucky Johnson & Phil Woods - following which he would record and release a further six albums before the end of the 1950s, all for Mercury. Quincy Jones first eight albums, all released during this period, are featured on this 4CD set in their entirety, in glorious re-mastered sound, making this package the most complete Quincy Jones 1950s collection available today.

Dennis Chang
The name of his project is Flèche D'Or; also the title of a Django Reinhardt composition. Whether it is Gypsy Jazz, bebop or any other style, this is where you will be able to follow his musical journey.
He picked up the guitar in his teens and after having exploring various musical styles, he discovers the music of Django Reinhardt at the age of 19. For the next few years, he would dedicate himself exclusively to the style. To date, he has performed and/or recorded with the best musicians in the style such as Ritary Gaguenetti, Aurélien Trigo, Edd la Bish, Lollo Meier, Paulus Schäfer, Stéphane Wrembel, Chriss Campion, Andreas Öberg, Fapy Lafertin, Am Ketenes, Tim Kliphuis to name a few.
He is sponsored by AJL guitars, Schatten Design, Godin Guitars, Saga Gitane Parisian strings.
Outside of Gypsy Jazz, he is heavily influenced by other forms of jazz (bebop, fusion, latin), rock/pop, blues, classical; any kind of good music!

Celebrating Grappelli was issued shortly after the legendary jazz violinist's death on December 1, 1997; it is actually under guitarist Martin Taylor's leadership, with Grappelli as an overdubbed guest on three tracks plus three duets repeated from their Reunion CD recorded in 1993. This tribute was conceived by Taylor for his Spirit of Django Band as a way of honoring the violinist.

Rhythm & Blues was not recognised as a distinct musical genre until the late 1940s and these CDs from the middle of that decade reflect the musical taste of the black population of the United States as it moved away from country blues towards a commercial, dance-oriented fusion of jazz and blues that came to be known as jump blues.
