Published almost two centuries ago in 1823, the Diabelli Variations are more than just a major work in Ludwig van Beethoven’s oeuvre and in the history of piano music. Rather, they are among those exceptional works of music history that simply cannot be classified and – as Igor Strawinsky wrote in amazement about the Grand Fuge for string quartet composed three years later – could well have been created on a satellite in outer space. Despite only daring to première the Diabelli Variations in Berlin in 1856 and focussing on them throughout his life as an artist and publisher, Hans von Bülow was correct in his prediction that this work would provide “musical brain food for generations” – and not just for pianists and their audiences, but for music historians and theorists too. As such, countless works have been dedicated to the origins, intention, structure and (biographical) symbolism of the work – not least, in the tradition of von Bülow, by the pianists themselves, as demonstrated by the editions and statements of greats such as Artur Schnabel, Alfred Brendel and Rudolf Buchbinder.

It was as Ponchielli’s long-suffering ballad singer, La Gioconda, that Callas made her Italian debut, in 1947 at the Arena di Verona, and it proved crucial to her career. Five years later, La Gioconda became her first studio recording of a complete opera. It showcases both the dark-hued splendour of her voice at this period – she was still in her twenties – and her inimitable intensity and insight.

While we associate Tchaikovsky with music of virtuoso power and difficulty, sweeping up audiences with the fire of the Violin Concerto and First Piano Concerto, he also applied himself to music for the ever-growing market of amateur music-makers during his lifetime. Both of the cycles recorded here by Yuan Sheng were produced for this market, comprising short pieces, most of them quite simple on the page, but thoroughly imbued with quintessentially Tchaikovskian qualities.

André Previn leads the London Symphony Orchestra in this beautiful legacy recording of Tchaikovsky's ballet, The Sleeping Beauty, Op. 66. The score was completed in 1889, and is the second of his three ballets. The original scenario was conceived by Ivan Vsevolozhsky, and is based on Charles Perrault's La Belle au bois dormant. The choreographer of the original production was Marius Petipa.

Ivan Ronda studied under Maestro Luigi Toja at the Giuseppe Nicolini Conservatory in Piacenza, graduating with the highest distinction in piano, organ, harpsichord, choral and orchestral conducting; he also received an honorary diploma of merit on completion of his eighth year of advanced study and went on to attend masterclasses in piano and organ, notably with the great French virtuoso Jean Guillou.
