Jephtha was the last full-length composition that Handel wrote. (The Triumph of Time and Truth of 1757 was almost entirely made up of pre-existing music.) Given this fact, and also that the actual writing of it was an inordinately laborious task for Handel as he fought with rapidly failing eyesight, it's incomparable depth of expression and personal commitment make the whole work a profound and magnificent conclusion to his life's output. Based on a story from Judges XI, it tells of Jephtha leading the Israelites against the Ammonites and his ultimate sacrifice.

Most music lovers have encountered George Frederick Handel through holiday-time renditions of the Messiah's "Hallelujah" chorus. And many of them know and love that oratorio on Christ's life, death, and resurrection, as well as a few other greatest hits like the orchestral Water Music and Royal Fireworks Music, and perhaps Judas Maccabeus or one of the other English oratorios. Yet his operas, for which he was widely known in his own time, are the province mainly of specialists in Baroque music, and the events of his life, even though they reflected some of the most important musical issues of the day, have never become as familiar as the careers of Bach or Mozart. Perhaps the single word that best describes his life and music is "cosmopolitan":

Handel’s work on Jeptha in 1751 was repeatedly delayed as a result of his steadily progressing blindness. Even so, with Jeptha Handel created a musical masterpiece of baroque oratorio, with its great choruses, emotionally expressive arias and gripping ensembles. A fine line up of soloists with the Kammerchor of the Dresden Frauenkirche and the Dresden Barockorchester, conducted by Matthias Grünert, make this another excellent release from Carus, presented as part of their Handel anniversary year celebrations.

Mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato has gained a strong following with novel, even fearless programs, flawlessly executed. The stimulus for In War & Peace was extramusical: DiDonato temporarily shelved a different project in the wake of the terrorist attack at the Bataclan concert hall in Paris. The concept is ambitious: the booklet includes quotes about finding peace from figures as varied as Patrick Stewart, Riccardo Muti, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and an inmate at New York's Sing Sing prison. Does it directly connect with DiDonato's program of Baroque arias? Listeners will have to decide for themselves, but the good news is that the program stands on its own.

Jephtha (HWV 70) is an oratorio (1751) by George Frideric Handel with an English language libretto by the Rev. Thomas Morell, based on the story of Jephtha in Judges (Chapter 11) and Jephthes, sive Votum (Jeptha, or the Vow) (1554) by George Buchanan. Whilst writing Jephtha, Handel was increasingly troubled by his gradual loss of sight, and this proved to be his last oratorio. In the autograph score, at the end of the chorus "How dark, O Lord, are thy decrees" he wrote "Reached here on 13 February 1751, unable to go on owing to weakening of the sight of my left eye."

Nuria Rial's recordings for dhm are highly praised all over the world. Her album "Muera Cupido" with the ensemble Accademia del Piacere has just been nominated for the Opus Classic. For her new album, the soprano, together with Spanish tenor Juan Sancho, has selected arias and duets from G. F. Handel's operas, oratorios and cantatas that sing of human and divine love. The accompanying Capella Cracoviensis, conducted by Jan Tomasz Adamus, completes the album with dance movements and overtures. In baroque opera it was common practice for the duets to be sung by sopranos and castratos. Handel also successfully used this combination, especially in his operas. At the same time, however, he also devoted himself to the duo instrumentation "soprano & tenor", which was not very widespread at the time. Handel's duet art is reflected on this album in the exquisite sound examples from the operas "Ariodante" and "Hercules, the oratorio "Esther", the secular cantata "Cecilia, volgi un sguardo" and the ode "Acis and Galatea".
