Harkonnen

is an American comic book series written by John Layman with art by Rob Guillory and published by Image Comics. It centers around Tony Chu, a police detective who is "cibopathic," meaning he gets psychic impressions from whatever he eats. Chu gets appointed to the FDA, which, because of the illegalization of chicken, has now become the most powerful law-enforcement branch of the United States government. See any connections so far? Well, the first three issues of Chew have all sold out multiple printings with the first issue receiving four printing as well as being reprinted in black and white in . To say that critical reception has been mostly positive would be an understatement. Peer response (i.e., other comics writers) however remains muted, probably because of sheer envy. Thus far the series has followed a 5-issue story arc format. The current issue #12 is the second issue of the third arc, "Just Desserts." After Robert Kirkman's , this is the best ongoing comic book series today. It is also the funniest. Quite a one-two punch for Image Comics. Issue #15 is the conclusion to the story arc, "Just Desserts." Issues #1-11 are all Minutemen scans; the latter issues are either Harkonnen-DCP or GiantRobot-CPS.

In the 11th millennium, Shaddam IV, ruler of the Galactic Empire, rids himself of his competitor Duke Leto Atreides by giving him control of the desert planet Dune also called Arrakis; fully aware that its present owner, Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, will not give it up without a fight. The reason is that Arrakis is the source of the valuable spice, a substance produced by enormous and dangerous sandworms, which bestows special mental qualities on anyone who consumes it. A short while later Harkonnen does indeed succeed in ambushing and massacring Leto and his men. Leto's mistress Lady Jessica, who is a member of the clairvoyant order of Bene Gesserit, manages to escape into the desert with her son Paul, and after a long and dangerous march they finally encounter the Fremen, the long suppressed desert tribe of Arrakis. Impressed by Paul's clairvoyant abilities, tribal prince Stilgar takes in the fugitives…

In the far future, the known universe is ruled by Padishah Emperor Shaddam Corrino IV; the most precious substance in his sprawling feudal galactic empire is the spice melange, which extends life, expands consciousness and is vital to space travel. The powerful Spacing Guild and its Navigators use the spice to safely guide interstellar ships to any part of the universe instantaneously. Four planets draw the attention of the Guild: Arrakis, a desert planet and only source of spice in the universe; Caladan, home of House Atreides; Giedi Prime, home of House Harkonnen; and Kaitain, home of the Emperor. The Guild, fearing a plot that might jeopardize spice production, sends a Navigator to demand an explanation from the Emperor, who confidentially shares his plans to destroy House Atreides. The popularity of Duke Leto Atreides has grown, and as Leto is suspected to be amassing a secret army using sound weapons called Weirding Modules, he is now a threat to the Emperor.
