This amazing document, recorded at the Styriarte Festival in Graz, Austria in June and July, 2009, and conducted by the renowned Nikolaus Harnoncourt, reestablishes Gershwin’s masterpiece as the great American folk opera it was meant to be in the first place – the “American Wozzeck.” . With New Zealand star Jonathan Lemalu as Porgy, Isabelle Kabatu as Bess, and Gregg Baker – who sang the role at the Met in 1985 and at the Glyndebourne Festival in 1986 – as Crown, the performance emphasizes the work’s enormous theatrical and musical qualities, gives it the importance it always deserved, and sets it squarely alongside the greatest pieces ever created for the concert hall.

In commemoration of the 200th anniversary of the death of Joseph Haydn, the Vienna Philharmonic has published under its own auspices a special edition intended to give an insight into the composer's vast symphonic production while at the same time furnishing a selective documentation of the Philharmonic's own Haydn interpretations. To this end, seven symphonies from different periods of Haydn's creativity were chosen, which were recorded by the Vienna Philharmonic with five different conductors over a period of 37 years. The oldest recording, under the baton of Zubin Mehta, dates from the year 1972, and is followed by concerts from the year 1991 with Christian von Dohnányi, 1996 with Pierre Boulez, 1998 with Franz Welser-Möst and three recordings from the anniversary year 2009 under Nikolaus Harnoncourt and, once again, Welser-Möst.

This 2009 production of Haydn's Il Mondo della Luna for the Theater an der Wien, conducted by Nikolaus Harnoncourt for his 80th birthday celebrations, is a treat for anyone interested in seeing rarely performed opera of quality and distinction, and seeing this particular 'dramma giocoso' done playfully and intelligently with respect and understanding for the material.

Nikolaus Harnoncourt The Complete Sony Recordings brings together for the first time Harnoncourt s complete recordings from 2002-2015 with his Concentus Musicus Wien, the Wiener Philharmonike, the Chamber Orchestra of Europe and the Symphonieorchester des Bayrischen Rundfunks. The Sony Classical edition features his famous symphony recordings of Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven and Bruckner, alongside his celebrated performances of great choral works such as the Verdi, Brahms and Mozart Requiems and Haydn's Die Schöpfung, as well as Mozart's opera Zaide, Haydn's Orlando paladino and Gershwin's Porgy and Bess.
