There can never be another album quite like "Space Ritual". Captured live, for many, it's Hawkwind's very apex - the sound of your brain being fried. Originally edited into four glorious sides, it now spills across two extended discs with bonus tracks. From hereon in, Hawkwind were permanently cast as sonic overlords with wit and intelligence just as strong as the substances coursing through their veins. There was always something of the whiff of Campari about poet and sometime frontman Robert Calvert among the heavy sweating hairies, as if he was puffing a cigarette through a holder, observing, detailing. The doom metal of Time We Left This World Today slamming in after Calvert's Richard III-isms on Sonic Attack still thrills. "Space Ritual" is as central to the 70s as "The Dark Side of the Moon" of the three-day week.

Recorded live in December 1972 and released the following year, Space Ritual is an excellent document featuring Hawkwind's classic lineup, adding depth and weight to the already irrefutable proof that the group's status as space rock pioneers was well warranted. As the quintessential "people's band," Hawkwind carried '60s countercultural idealism into the '70s, gigging wherever there was an audience. The band's multimedia performances were a perfect accompaniment for inner space exploration and outer space imagination. Though not concerned with rock's material trappings, Hawkwind was among the hardest-working groups in Britain, averaging a show every three days during the year preceding the recordings…

Many Hawkwind fans have never heard this album, and that's a shame because it is one of the strongest and most consistent discs of the band's career. Yes, it is a little weird hearing a female voice singing Hawkwind cuts, but Bridgette Wishart has a great voice and truly captures the Hawkwind spirit. The tracks are some of the most multi-dimensional and dynamic to come from the group, and the presence of violinist Simon House lends a bit of a Hall of the Mountain Grill texture in places. With a disc this strong it is hard to pick standouts, but a couple of pieces do rise above the rest…

One more poorly packaged hybrid collection combining highlights of two of the most ubiquitous collections in the entire Hawkwind catalog. We begin with the barely mixed and rudely distorted 1972 Brixton Sundown performance that was first broached on Space Ritual, Vol. 2, continue on through the BBC radio and live recordings that comprised the original (and, at the time, groundbreaking)Text of Festival album, and wind up with yet another frustratingly, pointlessly disjointed journey into the cobwebbed corners of "classic" Hawkwind.

The Space Ritual Alive in Liverpool and London is a 1973 live double album recorded in 1972 by UK rock band Hawkwind. It is their fourth album, reached #9 in the UK album charts and briefly dented the Billboard Top 200, peaking at #179. The original classic is now digitally remastered with 3 bonus tracks and sounds even better than ever.
