The composer of the chamber music presented here belongs to the large group of musical talents who left the Bohemian groves and meadows to find a place for themselves in the German-speaking world. Georg Druschetzky (1745-1819) chose a military career, became a well-known timpani virtuoso and soon came to the attention of the Hungarian nobility, who appreciated his virtuoso and administrative skills as much as his original creativity. Especially in the field of chamber music for wind instruments, this contemporary of Haydn and Mozart was an inexhaustible source of pleasure. Without rebelling against the great classical forms, Druschetzky knows how to constantly surprise his audience with a subtle refinement that is virtually written on the historical instruments of the Grundmann Quartet around oboist Eduard Wesly. As on the first album, the four of them are completely in their element.

Born in Poland in 1949, Emanuel Ax moved with his family to Canada before settling in New York City in 1961. There, beginning in 1966, he studied piano with Mieczyslaw Munz at the Juilliard School of Music. He made a concert tour of South America in 1969; in the year that followed he completed a bachelor's degree in French at Columbia University and became an American citizen.

First recording of Jan Ladislav Dussek's string quartets with the Camesina Quartet: they lay unnoticed in libraries for 200 years, but now the Camesina Quartet has rediscovered them and recorded them for the Musikmanufaktur Berlin label. Dussek composed these string quartets in 1806, shortly before his friend and employer, Prince Louis Ferdinand of Prussia, was killed in battle at Saalfeld. "They are the best that I have written, and neither in the style of Mozart, Haydn nor Pleyel, but in the style of Dussek, and I think that they will attract some attention in the musical world.

At a time when Joseph Haydn, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and others were making significant contributions to the modern string quartet, Wolf harked back to an older form of composition, emulating the Northern and Central German quadro, a trio sonata with an additional melody part. The three quartets of the op. 3 series are the pinnacle of Wolf’s quartet oeuvre.

Haydn conducted the first performance in 1768. This 5 star plus production was staged at the Congress Palace, Lugano in 1982. The fine Libretto in Italian is by Carlo Goldoni. The acting is superb, the body language great. In fact one of the best is an extra apprentice who has no lines at all. The singing is excellent throughout and Griletta (Antonella Manotti) has a very fine voice and technique. The staging is one of the finest I have ever seen.

Berlin Classics is proud to present the Schumann Quartet, winners of the BBC Music Magazine 2016 Newcomer award. “Landscapes” is a journey in sound to the roots of the Schumann Quartet, a foursome made up of the three brothers Erik, Ken and Mark Schumann and the viola player Liisa Randalu. Four very different works contribute their personal stories to form a magical whole. At the album’s hub is Arvo Pärt’s composition “Fratres”, meaning “brothers”. The Schumann Quartet rehearsed the work with Pärt in Viimsi in Estonia and recorded it there. The personal contact with the composer came through Pärt’s Estonian compatriot Liisa Randalu.
