Haydn Symphony 192

The most welcome of Hyperion's bargain label, Helios, reissues consists of recordings of Haydn's symphonies on 17 bargain priced CDs which are available individually. All feature Roy Goodman conducting his Hanover Band and each disc has about 70 generous minutes of recording. (Added here it's a Nimbus Records CD with Symphonies 94, 100 & 104 for a total of 18 CDs).

Otto Klemperer (1885-1973), im Jahr 1933 wegen seiner jüdischen Herkunft aus Deutschland vertrieben, verbrachte seine letzten Lebensjahre überwiegend in London und leitete dort das von Walter Legge 1946 gegründete Philharmonia Orchestra, eine ausgezeichnete Orchestervereinigung, die in erster Linie zu Schallplattenproduktionen herangezogen wurde, aber auch im Londoner und internationalen Konzertleben eine herausragende Rolle spielte. Er starb allerdings 1973 hochbetagt in Zürich, wo sich auch seine letzte Ruhestätte befindet.

The National Symphony Orchestra looks forward to releasing Beethoven’s remaining symphonies over the course of 2023 and 2024. The cover designs for this cycle feature the work of Kennedy Center Education Artist-in-Residence Mo Willems. Inspired by the genius of Ludwig van Beethoven, Willems created a series of large-scale abstractions influenced by each of the composer’s nine symphonies.

This 1966 recording, featuring the Festival Chamber Orchestra under the baton of Antal Doráti, presents two of Haydn's symphonic gems: Symphony No. 59 ("Fire") and Symphony No. 81.

The complete 104 symphonies by Joseph Haydn, performed by the Austro-Hungarian Haydn Orchestra conducted by Adam Fischer has been given the top 'Rosette' award by the Penguin Guide to recorded music. This orchestra was especially formed for these recordings by first-class players from the Wiener Philharmonic and the Hungarian State Orchestra , the performances were recorded in the Esterhazy Palace, Austria from 1987-2001.

Rodney Slatford’s virtuosic double bass takes center stage in this 1976 recording of Music for Double Bass, featuring works by Rossini, Haydn, Dittersdorf, and Keyper.

Christopher Hogwood and the Academy of Ancient Music have released eleven volumes which complete the cycle of Haydn symphonies. They play this music with just the right blend of elegance and vigour, and their smooth, spare textures and clean lines continue to persuade me they were right to dispense with the harpsichord continuo. This is definitely the Haydn cycle to collect.
