Haydn wrote his six ‘Apponyi’ quartets in 1793, for performance during his second London visit the following year. This is a world in which the members of The London Haydn Quartet are very much at home, and they bring all their usual attentive enthusiasm to these masterpieces.

I have avoided this music ever since I heard a poor performance, complete with several sermons, as a small boy. From that time, Haydn's Seven Last Words has always been associated in my mind with the longest day of my life. No longer shall I hold this view since this performance by the Lindsay Quartet is magical and it confirms them as something a bit more special than just our finest British quartet. There are, I suspect, few quartets who could sustain these seven slow movements, each lasting about ten minutes, and yet give them such variety of intensity, colour and mood. Come to think of it, with the wisdom of middle-age, I can now see that Haydn revealed himself as a visionary composer in the way he set about creating these seven miniature tone-poems for string quartet. The work is divided into nine sections comprising the seven slow movements each describing one of the final utterances of Christ on the Cross together with a slow introduction and a final Presto con tutta la forza which depicts the earthquake which occurred when ''the veil of the temple was rent in twain''. I suspect that some people may not find it a disc to be listened to from beginning to end; they may need substantial breaks between one movement and the next. In that case, they may end up with a shortened list of favourite movements: in my case, the wonderful view of Paradise in No. 2, the portrait of Christ's Mother in No. 3 and of the terrible energy of the earthquake in the final section. Highly recommended.'

Granted, there are better individual performances of the various symphonies from conductors as diverse as Eugen Jochum, Leonard Bernstein, Trevor Pinnock, and Thomas Fey; but when all is said and done this remains the finest complete set of Haydn symphonies yet recorded, and its basic musicality only seems to grow more impressive over time.

'When we speak of Joseph Haydn,' wrote Ernst Ludwig Gerber in his Lexicon der Tonkunstler of 1790-92, 'we think of one of our greatest men: great in small things and even greater in large… Everything speaks when he sets his orchestra in motion.' Gerber was among the first to recognise 'new and surprising' traits in Haydn's output, particularly among his Sturm und Drang (Storm and Stress) works of the early 1770s. Espousing spontaneity and passion as sources of creativity, Sturm und Drang despised the new rationalism of the Enlightenment, offering darkness and pessimism to counterpoise its orderly logic.

When dealing with classical and romantic repertoire, Hans Rosbaud put particular emphasis on the music of Joseph Haydn, the ground-breaking composer of the symphonic genre, whose willingness to experiment gave his music a distinctly avant-garde quality. This is the fourth instalment in the Hans Rosbaud SWR Archive Recordings series. Rosbaud's laconic interpretation of the symphonies was ahead of its time. This box set contains Rosbaud's only stereo recording of Haydn's music.

Born in Munich in 1923, Wolfgang Sawallisch was a prominent representative of the German conducting tradition, known for his thoughtful and refined interpretations of the classical repertoire. Beginning piano studies when he was five, Sawallisch developed rapidly as a child musician. His piano teachers were Ruoff, Haas, and Sachse. In 1947, following graduation from the Munich Hochschule für Musik, Sawallisch began his professional career, working first as a repetiteur and chorus master at the Augsburg Opera Theater. In 1949, he and his recital partner, violinist Gerhard Seitz, won the Geneva International Competition as best duo. In the same year, he began obtaining guest conducting assignments. When Sawallisch conducted the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra in 1953, he was the youngest person ever to have led that orchestra.
