We all know how busy Robert Berry (Hush, GTR, 3, solo, Ambrosia, producer), Gary Pihl (Sammy Hagar, Boston), David Lauser (Sammy Hagar) and Alan Fitzgerald (Montrose, Gamma, Night Ranger) are, so it doesn’t come as a real surprise that we had to wait nine years for a follow-up to the wonderful “Missing Piece” album.
The songwriting for this third album already started in 2000, but things were put on ice when the guys didn’t succeed in writing songs that were good enough. Things gained momentum again some three years ago, when Gary Pihl and Robert Berry started to exchange ideas for new songs by means of MP-3 files that they sent to each other through e-mail. What came out of these writing sessions sounded a lot fresher than the material that was written immediately after the release of “Missing Piece” and so the light turned to green for the writing and recording of a third Alliance album.

“Heimat” = German for “home / homeland / native land” - a term that merely refers to a relationship between people and spaces but has nevertheless always been highly emotionally charged. Often misused, it sometimes causes discomfort, lively discussions and battles over interpretation. Maik Weichert (guitar) comments: "’Heimat’ is not meant as the narrow-minded end point in the sense it has been used by agitators and populists, but the starting point for observations and perspectives. The album is about a much wider sense of the term ‘Heimat’: the homelands for many different people and also about the spiritual home, something that shapes and determines our thoughts and actions."

A notorious artistic and financial failure, Michael Cimino's Heaven's Gate was blamed for critically wounding the movie Western and definitively ushering out the 1970s Hollywood New Wave of young, brash, independent filmmakers. Taking a revisionist, post-Vietnam view of American imperialism, Cimino used the historical Johnson County War incident in Wyoming to create an impressionistic tapestry of Western conflict between poor immigrant settlers and rich cattle barons led by Canton (Sam Waterston) and his hired gun Nate Champion (Christopher Walken). Attempting to mediate is idealistic Harvard graduate and county marshal Averill (Kris Kristofferson), who is both Nate's friend and his romantic rival for the affections of Ella Watson (Isabelle Huppert). However, war erupts, at great cost to all involved.
