RCA Living Stereo Series from Analogue Productions. Another of the rare performances of violinist Jascha Heifetz and conductor Fritz Reiner together with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. This stunning recording of Brahms' Violin Concerto is nothing short of breathtaking. The original 30 ips 2-track analog tape was used to master these LP and SACD reissues. Remastered by Ryan Smith at Sterling Sound, these new versions are clearer than the originals and warmer and richer than past reissues.

Spectacular virtuoso playing, bravura passagework and show-stopping melodies are balanced with wistful lyricism and sublime tone painting in this irresistible program of perennial favorites, played with elan by the violinist Arabella Steinbacher. "Great violinists like Heifetz, Kresler, menuhin… played virtuosic pieces in their concerts," recalled Steinbacher in a recent interview. She lamented that such pieces are infrequently played owing to the perception that "…this kind of repertoire is 'not serious enough' which I find is really a pity and also not true."

This hybrid SACD contains stereo and 4.0 multi-channel audio and I think it's fantastic!
Tomita was 83 when he re-arranged and re-mixed his Kosmos album for SACD. I think it’s remarkable that he was still working, but I feel I must reluctantly share why you may want to skip this one…

By 1957 Erick Friedman was regarded as one of the most promising and talented young American violinists, the artist who just might become the next Heifetz. Instead, he became a student of Heifetz and put his burgeoning career on hold for three years. While he enjoyed great success in the early '60s, his star quickly dimmed and he eventually branched out into teaching and conducting. This RCA "Red Seal" 1962-63 recordings featuring Erick Friedman and the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Sir Malcom Sargent & the Chicago Symphony Orchestra conducted by Walter Hendl, perform violin showpieces by Saint-Saëns, Paganini, Ravel and more.

Jascha Heifetz, Charles Munch - Beethoven, Mendelssohn: Violin Concertos (2004)

XLD | FLAC (image+.cue, log) | Covers Included | 01:01:54 | 328 MB
Genre: Classical | Label: RCA Red Seal | Catalog: 82876 61391-2

These classic recordings need little comment from me on artistic grounds. Heifetz's account of the Mendelssohn never has been bettered for sheer dazzling virtuosity, and although the Beethoven is more controversial (some find it "cold"), I love its unaffected, truly classical purity. Besides, you also get Munch and the Boston Symphony, no mean bonus. It's interesting to compare the two performances in multichannel sound, since the Beethoven is two-track, while the Mendelssohn offers three.

Better known for his works for orchestra or solo piano, Claude Debussy also composed a wealth of beautiful chamber music. This disc featuring the Pražák Quartet and the Kinsky Trio Prague (and invited guests) offers a selection of six works, ranging from the Piano Trio No.1 of 1879, via a fascinating chamber arrangement of the always popular 'Prélude à l'après-midi d'un Faune' to his last work, the Cello Sonata written in 1915. This audiophile quality multi-channel SACD presents these works a unique coupling, not featured on any other disc.
