Herbie Hancock will always be one of the most revered and controversial figures in jazz, just as his employer/mentor Miles Davis was when he was alive. When Herbie Hancock released Possibilities (2005), a collaborative effort that paired the great pianist and composer with a group of pop and rock stocks from the world over, it was obvious the restless master was entering a new phase of his long career. In that context, River: The Joni Letters makes perfect sense. Hancock and his fine band Lionel Loueke (guitar), Wayne Shorter (soprano and tenor saxophones), Dave Holland (bass), Vinnie Colaiuta (drums) prepare a series of instrumentals and vocal interpretations of the songs of Joni Mitchell. The vocalists here include those who were inspired by Mitchell, namely Norah Jones, Corinne Bailey Rae, and Mitchell herself on one number (her own recording, Shine, was released on the same day), and some of her peers in the pop world, including Tina Turner and Leonard Cohen.

To celebrate its first decade anniversary, Herbie Hancock’s genre-defying River: The Joni Letters will be will be released as a 2CD/digital expanded edition with four bonus tracks. Hancock’s ode To Joni Mitchell, the album features songs composed by or influential to the iconic female singer/songwriter. The extra tracks span Mitchell’s expansive career and include ‘A Case Of You’ and ‘All I Want’ (featuring Sonya Kitchell) from her masterpiece Blue, ‘Harlem In Havana’ from her 1998 album Taming The Tiger and ‘I Had A King,’ the opening song on Mitchell’s debut record Song To A Seagull. ‘Harlem In Havana’ and ‘I Had A King’ are making their debut in any physical format.

Other than the easy-listening pieces that appear near the beginning of the program, this is one of The Yellowjackets' strongest jazz dates. Bob Mintzer's creative reeds (switching between tenor, bass clarinet, soprano and the EWI) keep the music stimulating and keyboardist Russell Ferrante has come a long way as both an improviser (where he is most influenced by Herbie Hancock) and as the band's main composer. With bassist Jimmy Haslip and drummer William Kennedy in strong supporting roles, the ensemble plays intelligent funk grooves, some mood music and occasional sections of straight-ahead jamming. The inclusion of the Miles Davis-influenced trumpeter Tim Hagans on half of the selections adds variety to a particularly enjoyable set.
