The term Romanticism is understood differently by everyone, and the composers of that epoch chose different approaches when setting a particular subject to music. In sacred music, of course, specific names and pieces immediately come to mind: Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Anton Bruckner, Josef Gabriel Rheinberger, Max Reger, and others. But the period between 1789 and 1914 saw the emergence of a large number of composers who gave this epoch its face, and not only in Germany. With the album "Nightfall - Sacred Romantic Parts Songs," the Jugendchor Hochtaunus under the direction of its artistic director Tristan Meister presents 18 works by European Romantic composers. Known pieces such as Reger's "Nachtlied," Rheinberger's "Abendlied" and Brahms' "Ach, arme Welt" can be heard as well as exciting new discoveries such as a musical setting of "Our Father" by Poland's Stanislaw Moniuszko or the "Lord.

When the beginning of Heinz Winbeck’s First Symphony descended upon the listeners at the Donaueschingen Festival on October 19, 1984, the audience experienced many listening experiences. A relentless orchestral unison with brutal intervening blows, a nightmare of annihilation, crushing everything, a booming pounding tutti, interrupted by rests nourishing the deceptive hope that the hurricane might be over, only for it to then start to rage with renewed strength, again and again, manic, breathless, never ending.

As one of the most legendary champions of Bach Karl Richter's many (and in some instances multiple) recordings of the composers Cantata's arguably is his greatest achievement. Richter enlisted many of the finest vocalists in their prime during the 1950's through the early 70's for these recordings elevating the neglected form at the time to the level of Grand Opera. His conducting, especially for his day as well remains remarkably animated and fluent yet always respectful of Bach's underlying powerful architectural components. These recordings set the standard and for many today remain the benchmark performances by which all new ones continue to be judged.

The second section of the cantata is a long vocal section opening with four soloists (soprano, alto, tenor and bass) singing together. Many recordings of this cantata use a choir for this section, but recent recordings have featured a one-voice-per-part strategy here, as does this one. The texture of this is excellent, although the balance between the voices wavers a bit. The tenor, bass and soprano each have ariosos within this section. Tenor Knut Schock enters a bit heavily, but his voice is quite appropriate for the melancholy tone of his section. Bass Bas Ramselarr has a slightly dark, yet clear voice. His section features a delightful accompaniment by the two recorders - in an interesting counterpoint with such a deep voice - and, again, the balance is slightly off, his voice sometimes drowning out the recorders just a bit…

In 1711 Graupner was already appointed court conductor and he would continue to work in Darmstadt for the rest of his life. Graupner’s focus shifted to sacred vocal music, which explains the sheer abundance of the 1,400-plus cantatas he composed. In 1723 the Leipzig city magistrates were looking for a new cantor at the Thomas School – and wanted him, above all. Alas, Graupner’s patron did not release him from his contract an so they had to hire Bach. Graupner, famous and widely celebrated during his lifetime, was soon thereafter forgotten. As we rediscover and hear more and more of his works, however, the judgement of his contemporaries would appear to us as increasingly germane. The present recording spans the liturgical arc from Maundy Thursday via Good Friday and Easter Sunday to Easter Monday and presents one liturgical work for each of the festive days – and each of them a world premiere recording!

Nikolaus Harnoncourt and Gustav Leonhardt were at the forefront of the early music movement that swept classical music in the ’70s and ’80s, performing pieces from the canon with period instruments in order to re-create the original intent of the composer as closely as possible. And their most enduring legacy is right here, the complete survey of Bach’s sacred cantatas that they began in 1971 and completed in 1988. This body of work has served as a beacon for younger musicians seeking a fuller understanding of Bach’s work, and will forever be regarded as one of the pioneering projects in the history of recording classical music. 60 CDs in all.

Throughout most of his professional life, Johann Sebastian Bach composed cantatas for use at church services: it is thought that he probably wrote at least 300 such works. Some 200 of these are still extant, of which the earliest hail from Bach's time as organist in Arnstadt (1703-07) and the last were composed only a year or two before his death in 1750. In 1995, when Masaaki Suzuki and his Bach Collegium Japan began the monumental journey of recording the cantatas, they decided to follow in Bach's footsteps.
