For over two decades, the Hi-Hat Club occupied a choice location among the jazz clubs of Boston’s South End district, at the corner of Columbus and Massachusetts Avenue. After the end of World War II, lesser luminaries took over the band-stand, and after a while entertainment practically stopped altogether. Dave Coleman, a jazz promoter, had taken over management of the club in 1949. Through Coleman’s personal initiative, the Hi-Hat enjoyed its most successful years, and by 1951 it was the only club featuring a consistent policy of presenting modern jazz.

If you are a fan of Harry James, this is likely a recording you'll want to find unless you own them already. Still, having all four of these original recordings – One Night Stand, Harry James in Hi-Fi, Jazz Session, and More Harry James in Hi-Fi all together – is a treat. Though well beyond his initial foray into big-band swing jazz, but not past his prime, James is here on two CDs that document live concert dates at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago in October of 1952, in Hollywood during the winter of 1954 and 1955, and in July of 1955…

On this all-around excellent CD, Benny Goodman performs a dozen selections (mostly Fletcher Henderson arrangements) with a big band filled with sympathetic players in 1954 and eight other numbers with a pair of smaller units that also feature pianist Mel Powell and either Charlie Shavers or Ruby Braff on trumpets. Although the big-band era had been gone for almost a decade, Benny Goodman (then 46) plays these swing classics with enthusiasm and creativity and shows that there was never any reason for anyone to write him off as "behind the times."
