Long before "La La Land" or "Birdman" Jazz was a perfect way to underscore and even enhance the action on the silver screen - not only in Hollywood, but all the way across Europe, too. Some of the best and most influential Original Jazz Soundtracks from the 1950s and early 1960s are documented in this unique 10 CD collection. Beginning with Miles Davis' iconic soundtrack to Louis Malle's "Ascenseur pour l'échafaud", whose leading actress Jeanne Moreau can be seen with the trumpeter on the cover of our box set, and leading all the way to Henry Mancini's score to Orson Welles' "Touch of Evil". Seven pals decide to take a few days'holidays to free up the time necessary to pull three enormous pranks. Their aim is to ridicule three established bodies: the army, the church and the administration. Quite arbitrarily, they set their hearts on two peaceful sub-prefectures, Ambert and Issoire. Broudier, disguised as a government minister, turns up at the barracks, demands and obtains the organization of night maneuvers. The following day, Bénin, dressed up as a reverend, preaches in the cathedral of Issoire a sermon against the precepts of the Church. As for Lesueur, he disturbs the inauguration of the statue of Vercingétorix by an MP. But the holidays are over. The seven of them can'r part without a last joke…

In the early 1960s Gillian Hills was at the heart of a cultural shift that saw French popular music evolve from the chanson tradition to embrace modern pop and rock influences. Indeed, she may well have acted as a catalyst for that change, incorporating both American and British influences in her recordings when she could. And yet, by the time Gillian was 21, her recording career was all but over and she would return to acting.
