Candido Camero was born on April 22nd, 1921 in Barrio Cerro, Havana, Cuba. Candido has become an important star in the jazz world, as well as the Afro Cuban genre, performing and recording with Machito's Afro Cubans, Billie Holiday, Billy Taylor, Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Duke Ellington, Stan Kenton and recently with Tony Bennett. The list goes on and on. He has transformed the conga drum into an international instrument used in all genres of music.

Maestra Vida is the name of the first original salsa opera (the first in history corresponds to Larry Harlow's 1973 Hommy, an adaptation of the rock opera Tommy by The Who), composed by the Panamanian artist Rubén Blades, recorded in studio with the inclusion of symphonic instruments and produced by Willie Colón in 1980 for the Fania Records label.

The legendary conga player, now at the age of 92, is still making heads turn and bodies move with a masterful command of his instruments. Candido, by way of his spectacular showmanship and rapport with audiences and his unique style of tuning his three conga drums, has transformed the conga drum into an international instrument spanning all genres of music.
