Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show (shortened to Dr. Hook in 1975) was an American rock band, formed in Union City, New Jersey. They enjoyed considerable commercial success in the 1970s with hit singles including "Sylvia's Mother", "The Cover of 'Rolling Stone'" (both 1972), "Only Sixteen" (1975), "A Little Bit More" (1976), "Sharing the Night Together" (1978), "When You're in Love with a Beautiful Woman" (1979), "Better Love Next Time" (1979), and "Sexy Eyes" (1980). This 40-song assortment will definitely appease those who want a hefty one-stop of Dr. Hook's best material, but it also makes for a worthy summation of the band's career. All but the last two of Dr. Hook's Top 40 singles appear here, led by "Sylvia's Mother," "The Cover of the Rolling Stone," and "Only Sixteen," while excluding later efforts like "Girls Can Get It" and "Baby Makes Her Blue Jeans Talk." All of their second-bests are also present, including fan favorites such as "More Like the Movies," "The Radio," "Jungle to the Zoo," and "On the Way to the Bottom." Their absurd lean toward rock & roll throughout the '70s is well-covered in songs like "I Got Stoned and I Missed It," "Bad Eye Bill," "You Make My Pants Want to Get Up And Dance," "Walk Right In"…

The band had eight years of regular chart hits in the United States, where their music was played on top-40, easy listening, and country music outlets, and throughout the English-speaking world including the UK, Canada and South Africa. Their music spanned several genres, mostly novelty songs and acoustic ballads in their early years, though their greatest success came with their later material, mostly consisting of disco-influenced soft rock, which the band recorded under the shortened name Dr. Hook.

Platinum Hook was a slick R&B/Funk combo who released three albums on Motown between 1978 and 1983. Having signed to the label for their debut eponymous release in 1978, Platinum Hook offered up a smooth and engaging R&B/Funk sound that more than matched their label mates and other rivals of the time. Platinum Hook opens with the tight club groove Bittersweet, a horn and synth led track that introduces the groups lead vocalists Tina Renee Stanford and Stephen Daniels to blistering effect. Track 2 is an excellent cover of Shotgun's mid-tempo funk jam from the previous year, Hotline. ''Til I Met You and Lover What You've Done (To Me) are both smooth soul ballads that still bring the funk into the rhythms and help round out the albums overall sound. Standing On The Verge (Of Getting It On), a cover of the Funkadelic classic, can hold its head up high to the original.
