To commemorate Liszt's 200th birthday year, this release gathers together all of Vladimir Horowitz's Liszt recordings controlled by the Sony/BMG group and previously issued by RCA, CBS, and Sony in a four-disc collection. Each disc covers a specific period of Horowitz's recording career, such as "The Last Decade", "Horowitz at Carnegie Hall–Early Live Recordings", and "Early Studio Recordings".

A pianist of legendary fame and stature, Vladimir Horowitz was born in Kiev, Ukraine. His mother, herself a professional pianist, provided his first instruction at the piano and was the first to recognize his extraordinary talents; he studied further at the Kiev Conservatory. His first public appearance was a recital in Kiev on May 30, 1920, and in 1922 he gave a series of 15 concerts in Kharkov for which he was paid in food and clothing. Although Russia was still reeling from the revolution of 1917, Horowitz fashioned successful concert tours in major cities such as Moscow, Leningrad, and Kiev – marking the beginning of a performing career of unflagging and spectacular success.

Vladimir Horowitz. Even more than twenty-five years after his death, his name still conjures up magical imagery. An artist of extraordinary pianistic abilities, Horowitz came to define an era, when performing artists put their personal stamp on everything they did. And Horowitz did it like no one else, before or since. This CD set is taken from one of those concerts, a recital from Orchestra Hall, Chicago, on October 26, 1986. Here we hear him in his element, before a live audience. We may not be able to attend a Horowitz recital anymore, but this is the next best thing – with a little imagination, we can become part of the audience ourselves, and it’s just thrilling.

After an absence of twelve years, Vladimir Horowitz's return to the concert stage was one of New York s most exciting musical events. It was Sunday, May 9, 1965, when the great pianist stepped onto the stage of Carnegie Hall, greeted by a shouting, standing ovation. It was his first public performance since he had left the same stage on February 25, 1953. The recording of his recital would be awarded with three Grammy® Awards and become one of the most successful classical albums. In the months before the historic day of May 9, Horowitz went to Carnegie Hall twice in January, twice in April to play for his wife and close friends, before he decided he was ready to perform publicly.

Horowitz Live and Unedited - The 1965 Carnegie Hall Return Concert Music

Though it was advertised as a live recording, the original LP release of the recital included a number of unacknowledged edits to correct errors and imperfections in Horowitz's playing. While Horowitz, himself, said in later years that his greatest performances were never note perfect, he apparently couldn't resist having the recording doctored. Those edits have always been the subject of controversy, especially since every aspect of the performance seemed engraved on the memories of those present at the historical concert. Sony Classical's new edition of the live recording returrns for the first time to the original, unexpurgated source to restore the pure spontaneity and brillance of Horowitz's playing - mistake and all - on that memorable afternoon.
