Throughout his decades-long career, Dan Hicks stood as one of contemporary music's true eccentrics. While steeped in folk, his acoustic sound knew few musical boundaries. He drew on country, call-and-response vocals, jazz phrasing, and no small amount of humor to create a distinctive, albeit sporadic, body of work that earned him a devoted cult following. Hicks was born December 9, 1941, to a military family then living in Arkansas, and grew up in California, where he was a drummer in a number of high-school bands. He attended college in San Francisco, where he switched to guitar and began playing folk music. He returned to the drums, however, when he joined the Charlatans, one of the Bay City's first psychedelic bands.

Red Hot Chilli Pipers This Scottish pipe and drum group was formed at the start of the 00s by Stuart Cassells (b. 1979, Falkirk, Scotland; pipes), Willie Armstrong (b. Scotland; pipes), Kevin MacDonald (b. Scotland; pipes), Steven Graham (b. Scotland; drums) and Malcolm McEwan (b. Scotland; drums). With Cassells, Graham and McEwan all studying at the prestigious Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, the group could boast a fine array of talented young players.

Few rock groups of the 1980s broke down as many musical barriers and were as original as the Red Hot Chili Peppers, who evolved from fun-loving party boys to alt-rock elder statesmen over the decades. Perfecting a rousing musical style that combined funk and punk rock together (with an explosive stage show to boot), the Chili Peppers spawned a slew of imitators in their wake, but still managed to be the leaders of the pack into the 21st century.
