Étrange destin que celui de cet Ange de Nisida de Gaetano Donizetti qui figure sur aucune liste de ses opéras… et pour cause ! Voulant fuir des problèmes avec la censure italienne, Donizetti décide de faire présenter cet opéra, dans une adaptation française, à Paris. Les répétitions commencent en 1840, mais elles sont bientôt arrêtées à la suite de la faillite de la troupe. Donizetti réutilisa une grande partie de son ouvrage pour composer La Favorite. C’est un peu le même cas de figure que Rossini réutilisant Le Voyage à Reims pour le refondre dans Le Comte Ory.

Following the success of Crowded House's debut and the band's grueling promotion schedule, Neil Finn was clearly showing signs that he was no longer happy being New Zealand's zany ambassador to the U.S. While the material on Temple of Low Men demonstrates great leaps in quality over its predecessor, it is a darkly difficult album, especially for those expecting Crowded House, Pt. 2 – in short, there are no immediately accessible singles. Instead, Finn digs into the depths of his emotional psyche with obsessive detail, crafting a set of intense, personal songs that range from the all-too-intimate look at infidelity of "Into Temptation" to the raucous exorcism of "Kill Eye." Through all of this introspective soul-searching, Finn reveals most of all his true mastery of melody.

Over the last few months, I’ve been reviewing just a few of the Backbeats series of compilations released by Harmless since 2009. This is a comprehensive overview of various genres of music that numbers everything from Deep Soul, Eighties Garage and Northern Soul to Philly Soul, Disco and House music. One of my favorites of the thirty compilations that Backbeats, a subsidiary of Harmless have released is The Big Apple Bites Back-New York House and Remix Culture, released in July 2010. This is compilation that contains a combination of Salsoul and house music, many of which are remixed by various DJs. Among the DJs remixing tracks are Frankie Knuckles, Kerri Chandler, Joe Clausell and Blaze.

With the heavy lifting of the Crowded House reunion out of the way, Neil Finn is able to settle into comfortable craft on Intriguer, the band’s sixth album. Intriguer isn’t as self-consciously weighty as Time on Earth – Finn is not tackling mortality in the wake of the death of his longtime friend and bandmate Paul Hester – but it’s also not as hazy as Finn’s pair of solo LPs.
