Eminent composer and revered teacher, Robert Fuchs, was an established part of Vienna’s musical landscape. His six violin sonatas fuse lyricism with conversational ease and chromatic harmonies with folk-derived melodies. This second volume of the complete set (Volume 1 is on 8.574213) charts a decade’s worth of composition, from 1905 to 1915. No. 4 in E major is hymn-like, while No. 5 in A major is playful and deeply lyrical. His final violin sonata No. 6 in G minor, is sombre with a nervous energy reflective of the time of its composition, though still, as always, exuding Brahmsian richness and beauty.

Not only was Robert Fuchs an admired friend of Brahms but he nurtured a prodigious number of pupils, among whom were Enescu, Korngold, Mahler, Wolf, and Sibelius who called Fuchs a clever orchestrator, professional to his fingertips, and very happy as a composer. The three Violin Sonatas, composed over a 24-year period between 1877 and 1901, exemplify Fuchs superbly crafted and melodious grace, with soaring Romanticism spiced with occasional Hungarian colour, folkloric themes and vivacious finales.

Friedrich Seitz was a noted violinist who served as concertmaster of the Bayreuth Festspiele, toured widely as a soloist and also composed a series of works, principally for violin and piano. He is best known for his Concertos for Violin and Piano, or Schüler-Konzerte (Student Concertos). Designed as an introduction to violin technique, they can be divided into two kinds: those wholly in the first (and easiest) position and those employing more advanced positions. Containing delightful melodies, short cadenzas, double-stops, trills, staccato bowing and much else, the concertos have proved enduringly popular vehicles for young performers since the day they were published.

German violinist/composer Friedrich Seitz performed widely as a soloist and chamber musician, as well as working as a conductor and founding the first music school in Magdeburg. The Concertos for Violin and Piano or Schüler-Konzerte (‘Student Concertos’) are designed as introductions to violin technique, Seitz’s genius being to create student works that are always tuneful and interesting, with flowing and expressively inventive melodies, wonderful slow movements and plenty of carefully curated technical fireworks. This second volume takes us up to Seitz’s ambitious and beautiful final Schüler-Konzert.
