Accurate and efficient understanding of remote sensing data is an increasingly important issue which can make significant contributions to global environmental analysis and economic development. In this book, we introduce the challenges and advanced techniques in the field of remote sensing image understanding. This area has attracted a lot of research interest, and significant progress has been made during the past years, particularly in the optical, hyperspectral, and microwave remote sensing communities.

Recently, remote sensing and GIS techniques have gained increasing importance for rapid urbanization, the expansion of urban growth, and the enlargement of populations, due to the application of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and deep learning algorithms. This Special Issue aims to present the state-of-the-art research on optics, SAR, hyperspectral images, and GIS techniques for monitoring urban area environments corresponding to changes in times using publicly available and commercial datasets such as satellite and UAV data.

To date, ENVI software package is one of the most successful and affordable software for visualization and data processing, which includes a set of tools for the complete cycle of data-processing and orthorectification of spatial referencing images to obtain the necessary information and its integration with GIS data.
