Ian Shaw - jazz singer, songwriter (plus stand-up comedian, radio presenter and producer!) - has returned to working with that classic jazz ensemble, the piano trio. A frequent and accomplished solo performer, for this new recording Ian craved a bit of company, and what company he found… the outstanding pianist Barry Green, distinguished bassist Mick Hutton and ace drummer Dave Ohm, three of the UK’s very finest players.

Twice winner of the BBC Jazz Award for Best Vocalist, Ian Shaw's return to working with the singer-with-trio format has him teaming up with the in-demand young pianist Barry Green, legendary UK bassist Mick Hutton and an old cohort, drummer David Ohm. Following their appearance in 2014 at the prestigious North Sea Jazz Festival, Shaw returned to Hamburg's Elbjazz this year with the trio to showcase his new work. These arrangements form the basis of The Theory of Joy.

As a youngster, Miguel Gorodi led something of a nomadic existence. He was born in Spain in 1990 but was then raised in Saudi Arabia and Thailand before moving to England in 2006. In his mid-teens he won a scholarship to study music at Wells Cathedral School and two years later received a place at London's Guildhall School of Music and Drama to study trumpet. He graduated from there in 2012 with a first class honours degree but stayed on for a further two years having been awarded a fellowship in the Jazz department. Initially recruited by vocalist Ian Shaw to play on his album The Abbey Road Sessions (Splash Point Records, 2011), Gorodi has been a sideman and soloist at sessions throughout Europe including, Scandinavia and Russia. Gorodi is now an in-demand trumpeter and a member of the Barry Green Sextet, SEED Ensemble and the London City Big Band. He also plays regularly with the prestigious London Jazz Orchestra.

Miguel Gorodi is a Spanish born trumpeter and composer who is now based in London following his studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. He is a hugely versatile musician and I have previously encountered his playing in a sideman context in such large ensembles as the Patchwork Jazz Orchestra, Andrew Linham Jazz Orchestra and the Sam Leak Big Band. Currently Gorodi is a member of pianist Barry Green’s sextet, saxophonist Cassie Kinoshi’s SEED Ensemble, the London City Big Band, the London Jazz Orchestra and the contemporary trad revivalists the Dixie Ticklers. He has also worked with the vocalists Ian Shaw and Lauren Bush.
