See for Miles' 1990 compilation The Best of Idle Race contains a generous 25 tracks – just over half of what the Idle Race recorded. This means that it does have the great majority of the best material the band recorded, and it would satisfy everyone outside of the rabid collectors who need anything. The catch is, if you're into the Idle Race, you need everything, so this collection is essentially a stopgap until you can track down (or afford) EMI's 1996 complete collection, Back to the Story. Even then, this may be a little more listenable, since it boils the group's interesting but erratic career to its very best – which is obscure British psych at its best (in other words, it's for the collectors who will seek it out, not anyone else).

PREVIOUSLY UNRELEASED RADIO SESSIONS FROM THE CLASSIC IDLE RACE LINE-UP Formed from the ashes of Birmingham s Nightriders (formerly featuring Roy Wood) The Idle Race were christened sometime in early 1967. Well received by the music press for their melodies, whimsical lyrics, and inventive production, the band were championed too by DJs John Peel and Kenny Everett, but despite critical respect and famous admirers such as The Beatles and Marc Bolan, Idle Race failed to catch fire with the public. They did however release two classic albums and a raft of superb singles on Liberty while Jeff Lynne was a member, and a further LP in 1971 after he had left (ironically, to join Roy Wood in the Electric Light Orchestra.) The Idle race also recorded many radio sessions for John Peel s Top Gear programme on the newly formed Radio One, and this CD features seven such sessions recorded between 1967 and 1969. Including alternative versions of many of the group s most famous songs, plus a few cover versions (such as Marc Bolan s Debra and Frantic Desolation , originally composed and recorded by San Francisco s Sopwith Camel), the 19 tracks included form a quite extraordinary rarities collection of this oft-forgotten late-1960s act. Released here for the first time, this compilation will prove a delight for fans of Idle Race, of Jeff Lynne and of classic 1960s Beatlesque pop music in general.

Deluxe digitally remastered and expanded two CD edition. Having emerged from the ashes of beat boom hopefuls Mike Sheridan and The Night Riders, by late 1966 Birmingham band The Idle Race were looking for a new guitarist. The successful applicant was local teenager Jeff Lynne. By the time the band signed to Liberty Records, the prodigiously-talented Lynne - several years younger than his new colleagues - had been promoted to frontman status, blossoming as the band's chief songwriter while also taking lead vocals. After 'Skeleton And The Roundabout' had attracted much airplay but fallen just short of the charts, the band cut their debut album. Issued in October 1968, the idiosyncratic The Birthday Party gave notice of a major new talent on the British pop scene.

The Electric Light Orchestra are an English rock band formed in Birmingham in 1970 by songwriters multi-instrumentalists Jeff Lynne and Roy Wood with drummer Bev Bevan. Their music is characterised by a fusion of Beatlesque pop, classical arrangements and futuristic iconography. After Wood's departure in 1972, Lynne became the band's sole leader, arranging and producing every album while writing virtually all of their original material. For their initial tenure, Lynne, Bevan and keyboardist Richard Tandy were the group's only consistent members.

The Idle Race are a beloved band of British psychedelia collectors, because the music was rare, because the band was Jeff Lynne's first significant group, and because the music was, by and large, very good. There is a bit of a relative judgment there - this is not music that stands among the very best of British pop-psych of the '60s, since it's not as innovative or consistent as the Beatles, Pink Floyd, the Move, or even Tomorrow, but it's certainly among the best of the second tier, as singles like "Impostors of Life's Magazine," "Big Chief Wooly Bosher," and "Girl at the Window" illustrate. Since this band itself is a collector's item, it only makes sense for collectors to seek out EMI Premier's 1996 collection Back to the Story, which was only available for a brief period (possibly a matter of months) the year of its release…

Following his stint as leader of the Electric Light Orchestra, singer/guitarist Jeff Lynne forged an equally successful career in the '80s and '90s as a producer with his distinctive sound gracing the latter-day records of many veteran rock & roll legends. Lynne began his career in the late '60s as the frontman of a group called the Idle Race, which recorded the album The Birthday Party for RCA in 1969. In 1970, Lynne accepted an invitation from Move leader Roy Wood to join his revamped band; the two shared a vision of fusing electric rock & roll with classical orchestrations, a concept that eventually transformed the Move into the Electric Light Orchestra (instead of the two groups running concurrently, as had originally been planned).

The album is focused on the core trio of Roy Wood, Jeff Lynne, and Bev Bevan who were the remaining members of rock group The Move. The Move were still releasing singles in the UK at the same time as this project was undertaken, but interest was soon to be abandoned in Wood's former band. The sound is unique on this recording in comparison to the more slickly produced ELO albums of the subsequent Lynne years, incorporating many wind instruments and replacing guitar parts with heavy, "sawing" cello riffs, giving this recording an experimental "Baroque-and-roll" feel; indeed, "The Battle of Marston Moor" is the most baroque-influenced track on the album. …

I don't remember where I picked up this hard to find CD, it might have been in Cambridge, MA. I don't know much about the release other than it contains the first two volumes of a 3 LP box set of the same name. Some sources I have seen indicate that it is a bootleg. The tracks are a mix of live BBC recordings, unreleased acetates, and rare versions of British sixties psychedelic classics. Many of the tracks have now resurfaced as part of recent artist-centred compilations but at the time I had heard very few of these tracks. The liner notes are sparse and simply provide a few words about the origin of each track, Pink Floyd on the front cover and Eddie Phillips of the Creation on the back cover. The sound is so-so but listenable considering the varied sources. A good cross-section of psych acts of the period. Originally released in 1990 as a box of 7" singles, this CD features rare singles; radio sessions and tracks previously officially unreleased.
