Nancy Wilson - Greatest Hits (1999)
Vocal Jazz, Soul, Pop | MP3 320 kbps CBR | 70 min | 161 MB
Label: Columbia | Rel: 1999

A "greatest hits" album, a concept pioneered by Columbia Records, is usually thought of as a compilation containing the single recordings by an artist that scored on the charts. In that sense, one might wonder what business Columbia had releasing a Nancy Wilson album called Greatest Hits since, in her 12-year tenure with the label, she had only placed four singles on the R&B charts, none of which reached the top half of the list. Those four recordings, "Love Won't Let Me Wait," "I Can't Make You Love Me," "Do You Still Dream About Me," and "Don't Ask My Neighbors," lead off the collection, and there is a previously unreleased "after hours mix" of "I Can't Make You Love Me" at the end. In between, there are two recordings that originally appeared on Capitol Records, Wilson's label from 1960 to 1980, one of which, "Save Your Love For Me" (accompanied by the Cannonball Adderley Quintet), was her initial R&B chart hit. The rest of the tracks are drawn from Wilson's Columbia albums of the 1980s and '90s, and they include: "Wish You Were Here," a duet with James Ingram; Stephen Sondheim's "Loving You," a duet with Peabo Bryson; "The Two Of Us," from the album of that title, which was co-billed to Ramsey Lewis; and "Forbidden Lover," a duet with Carl Anderson.

There are songs that just shouldn't be covered anymore, as timeless as they may seem. "Here Comes the Sun" is one of them, and Linda Eder seems to have made a major misstep in opening her album Gold with it. Her version is down-tempo, saccharine, and overly produced. It is a shame, because the rest of the album doesn't seem to follow suit. Taken as a whole, Gold may be one her strongest efforts, as she pours a lot of personal emotion and energy into a mix of classic pop standards and show tunes authored by her husband, Frank Wildhorn.

«Peter, Paul And Mary - Peter, Paul And Mary» (1962)
Genre: Folk | 1 CD | MP3 320 Kbps | Incl. Covers | 79 Mb

The legendary trio's eponymous 1962 debut produced two classics – “Lemon Tree” and Pete Seeger's “If I Had a Hammer”. Because they were always hipper and more political than the Kingston Trio, Peter, Paul & Mary were soon frequently credited as the group that transformed American folk music into '60s pop.

The 41 shows the Grateful Dead played in 1976 constituted a kind of shakedown cruise for the band, which had gone on hiatus from live performing in October 1974 and given only four concerts during 1975. In the spring of 1976, they suddenly reappeared with a film, The Grateful Dead Movie, and a live album, Steal Your Face, and between June 3 and October 15 they toured the U.S. They then woodshedded for four and a half months before re-emerging again in late February 1977, having recorded a new studio album, Terrapin Station. The only interruption in those efforts came with the New Year's Eve show they played at the Cow Palace in San Francisco, chronicled here, their first such seasonal appearance in four years.

Rock / Pop / Psychedelic / Baroque Pop / British Invasion

Generally relegated to footnote status, folk/rock duo (heavier on the folk) Chad & Jeremy nonetheless managed a certain level of influence among a group of navel-gazing sensitive types who couldn’t totally commit to either the Beatles or Stones camps. And yet they still managed to make something of a splash riding the crest of a wave that was the British Invasion. At a time when it seemed every artist was copping the sound of the Beatles and/or Stones, Chad & Jeremy remained (relatively) committed to their folk origins. The trouble with this was their particular brand of folk was slowly falling out of favor following the arrival of Bob Dylan.

Cicero Blake was the original lead singer of the Golden Tones, who evolved into the Kool Gents, the group that sprung Dee Clark. After leaving the Golden Tones which consisted of Blake, James Harper, Teddy Long, Howard McClain, and John Carter Blake made many solo recordings for small Chicago labels (Brainstorm, Renee, Success, etc.). John McCall, Doug Brown, and Dee Clark replaced Harper, McClain, & Blake (Uncle Sam called). When he got the chance to record for a major label Brunswick Records in 1967 the two tracks he cut, "You Got Me Walking," and "A Woman Needs to Be Loved," were shelved for 20 years. They didn't emerged until Kent Records released The Soul Of A Man. Blake's version of "Walking" also appears on Sweet Soulful Chicago released in 1987; Jackie Wilson, and the Chi-lites also recorded "Walking."
