Imrat Khan

The Guru is the 1969 soundtrack to a film by director James Ivory, with music by Ustad Vilayat Khan. Khan is joined by Ustad Imrat Khan on surbahar and sitar, Ustad Shakoor Khan on sarangi and Pandit Shanta Prasad on tabla. Actor Michael York, who stars in the film, does vocals in "Tom's Boat Song" while Ustad Zinda Hasan Khan and Ustad Fayez Ahmed Khan contribute their voices to "Concert in the Haunted Palace (Rag Malkauns)". This was released by RCA/Victor and is a vinyl rip.

Ustad Vilayat Khan (1928-2004) was one of India's well known sitar maestros. He was one of the great pioneers of his generation to introduce Indian Classical Music to the West, along with Ravi Shankar, Ali Akbar Khan, Nikhil Banerjee and his younger brother Imrat Khan. Widely regarded by many as the greatest sitarist of his generation, he recorded his first 78-RPM disc at the age of 8, and gave his last concert in 2004 at the age of 75 ~Wikipedia

Born in Bavaria in 1946, Alois Gromer has lived in England, India, and Morocco, which broadened his musical tastes and performing style. He attended a recital by sitarist Vilayat Khan and was so moved that he dedicated his life and art to the study of the sitar. After studying with master sitarist Imrat Khan, Gromer became a member of the Khan-i-Gharana dynasty in 1975 and added the Khan name to his own.
