Amy Ray and Emily Saliers are Indigo Girls. Together they write, arrange, record and perform music which over the course of 40 years has become a vital part of the lives of their legion of devoted fans around the world. Their first new studio album in 5 years, Look Long, is a testament to their storied career. Produced by John Reynolds at Peter Gabriel's Real World Studio in England, Look Long, features 11 brand new tracks all written by Ray and Saliers.
The Indigo Girls move to Hollywood Records – home of Los Lobos among others – and do what they do best, but add some new shades and textures as well. For starters, there are no anthemic political statements here, unless you are willing to regard to the truly personal as political (an admirable stance in this crazy world). Secondly, Emily Saliers and Amy Ray really concentrate on hooks on Despite Our Differences. What the record reflects, with its gorgeous blend of acoustic guitars, slippery snare drums and cymbals, and the painterly use of electric guitars and keyboards, is a relaxed, moving, and utterly poetic offering.
Recorded in front of a sold-out audience in Boulder, CO, and deftly mixed by GRAMMY-winner Trina Shoemaker (Sheryl Crow, Emmylou Harris), Indigo Girls Live With The University of Colorado Symphony Orchestra showcases Indigo Girls at their finest: raw, real, and revelatory. Spanning material from throughout the band’s career, the 22-song set features a mix of reimagined classics, including fan favorites “Galileo” and “Closer to Fine”, unexpected deep cuts, and tracks from Indigo Girls’ latest studio album, One Lost Day. Recorded live with the University of Colorado Symphony Orchestra, the GRAMMY-winning duo managed to find that elusive sonic sweet spot with this project, creating a seamless blend of folk, rock, pop, and classical that elevates their songs to new emotional heights without sacrificing any of the emotional intimacy and honesty that have defined their music for decades. After more than 50 performances with symphonies across America, the experience has finally been captured in all its grandeur on the band’s stunning new album, Indigo Girls Live With The University of Colorado Symphony Orchestra.
…This self-titled release captures the passion of their youth with voices that are a little cloudy, untamed, and raw, but the power that surges through them suggests a maturity far beyond their years. The same can be said of the songwriting – sheer poetry. To attempt examinations of these songs would not do them justice, for the layers of meaning and emotion unfold best upon repeated listening.
Most of the Indigo Girls' songs sound even better live. Amy Ray and Amy Saliers really rock in the live setting, where their powerful vocals and mighty abilities with a pair of acoustic guitars truly shine…
…That's the way it is with the Indigo Girls – perfect harmony between the elements.
