Visits by the Grateful Dead and succeeding bands of its core members – and, of course, throngs of Dead Heads - have long been a beloved Las Vegas tradition. But it didn’t always look like it would be that way. When the Dead, at their peak of their popularity, announced plans to play at the city’s largest stadium, the Silver Bowl, in 1991, there were attempts to get the shows cancelled by powerful forces in Vegas, including owners of some of the major hotels and casinos, who expressed concern that the band would attract “the wrong element” – a rather amusing notion in a city that was pretty much founded and run for many decades by a really wrong element, personified by infamous gangsters like Ben “Bugsy” Siegel.

Oh, and we mustn’t forget one more absolutely essential thing about Queens that’s been demonstrably true for the past several years: it’s one hell of a great place to see a Dead & Company show!

You just can’t beat a beautiful summer night at a major league ballpark – and that holds true whether you’re there to cheer on your favorite baseball team or celebrate that other great American pastime, the music of the Grateful Dead.

If there’s one thing we’ve learned in the long and glorious history of the Grateful Dead and the still-active founding members that carry on the music and the legacy of the band, it’s that Dead Heads don’t need a whole lot of encouragement to have a great time… simply get a bunch of ‘em together in one place, let the music play, and joyous celebration is sure to ensue, whether in an arena or stadium in any given American city, a suburban amphitheater, or ankle-deep in mud at a festival. But plunk a few thousand of our tribe down on a beautiful Mexican beach, with warm Caribbean waters lapping gently on the shore, and you just know that the fun factor is bound to go straight off the charts. Such has certainly been the case with what has become an eagerly anticipated tradition in recent years: the mid-winter pilgrimage of Dead & Company and their growing legion of followers to the Yucatan Peninsula for the event aptly named “Playing In The Sand.”
