INXS hailed from the pubs of Australia, which is part of the reason the band never comfortably fit in with new wave. Even when they branched out into synth pop on their early recordings, they were underpinned by a hard, Stonesy beat and the Jagger-esque strut of lead singer Michael Hutchence. Ultimately, these were the very things that made INXS into international superstars in the late '80s. By that time, the group had harnessed its hard rock, dance, and new wave influences into a sleek, stylish groove that made their 1987 album Kick a multi-million-selling hit.

"The Swing" is the 4th studio album by Australian rock band INXS, released in April 1984. It peaked at #1 on the Kent Music Report Albums Chart for five non-consecutive weeks from early April to mid-May 1984. The lead single "Original Sin" was recorded in New York City with Nile Rodgers and featured Daryl Hall on backing vocals. Overall, the album featured a slightly harder-edged sound than their previous releases. Beyond its local success, this album, as its predecessor, entered the US Top 75, reaching #52 on the Billboard 200. It also entered the Canadian Top 40, where it reached #27 on the RPM 100 Albums. In Europe, "The Swing" entered the Top 20 in France due to the big success of its single "Original Sin" which reached the French Top 5 during the summer of 1984 and the Top 40 in the Netherlands.

The seventh album from Australia's INXS basically sticks to the formula set up on Kick, mixing solid remixable dancefloor beats with slightly quirky production tricks, Michael Hutchence's rough-edged, bluesy vocals, and some good solid song hooks…

Brisbane-born vocalist and multi-instrumentalist, Cam Giles couldn’t recall a time when music wasn’t front and centre in his life. In Cam’s musical world, anything is possible. After working with INXS in its heyday, Cam feels a special connection to their music. With that, his love of jazz and the strong traditions in jazz to reinterpret tunes, Cam’s tribute to Michael Hutchence and the music of one of the greatest bands to come out of Australia, has been a labour of love. “A couple of years ago I was playing at summer jazz festivals and doing all the classic stuff and thought, let’s mix this up a little. I used to muck around with singing Need You Tonight and it just fitted, so I did that, and a couple of others and we decided to do a few more and it fell together like that.”

INXS wasn't quite there yet with Shabooh Shoobah – which, by the way, has to rank as one of the most annoying titles ever conceived – but at more than one point, they reached some total heights. For the most part, however, Shabooh Shoobah is an example of a talented bunch of performers still finding their own identity. There's a smart, slick punch to the album that suggests late-period Roxy Music crossed with a younger, brasher energy, which perfectly explains the sly grooves of songs like "To Look at You" and "Here Comes." It's all very pleasant and a good listen, with all six performers showing the skill and energy that made their live reputation so strong at the time, but mostly the songs aren't really anything deathless.
