Biography by Marisa Brown
Born in Florence on December 6, 1969, Italian singer Irene Grandi spent her young-adult years in bands that traversed the local club scene, not striking out as a solo artist until 1992, when she hooked up with songwriter Telonio and began working on new material. The song "Un Motivo Maledetto" caught the ear of the CGD label, and soon Grandi was signed, with a 1994 self-titled release on the way — after the requisite stop at the San Remo Festival, of course. The next year In Vacanza Da una Vita came out, followed by Per Fortuna Purtroppo in 1997. Two years later Verde Rosso e Blu hit shelves, but it took four more years for a new studio album, Prima di Partire, to be released (in the interim a greatest-hits collection, Irek, was issued). In 2005 Indelebile came out, followed but another greatest-hits compilation, Irene Grandi.Hits, in 2007.

Irene Kalisvaart was awarded the highest prize at the National Competition for Young Guitarists in Amsterdam at the age of 17. She studied with Jorge Oraison in Rotterdam, and continued with Ansgar Krause and Hubert Käppel at the Musikhochschule Köln where she finished her studies with distinction. She then went on to complete the ‘concert exam’ with Hubert Käppel in 2001. In between and thereafter she received numerous scholarships, international prizes and awards. Valuable musical mentors and masterclasses include Darko Petrinjak, Laura Young, Dale Kavanagh, Zoran Dukić, Àlex Garrobé, Pablo Márquez, Marco Socías, Thomas Müller-Pering, Aniello Desiderio and David Russell.

After years of cooperation and many duo-concerts Irène Schweizer and Jürg Wickihalder present the first duo-recording with compositions of Wickihalder, Schweizer and two beautiful pieces of Thelonious Monk. Music with a strong jazz feeling. Firm rhythm and decisive statements. The entire history of jazz plays a role: Lacy, Rollins and Coltrane, Monk, Dollar Brand, Horace Silver and Mal Waldron, even a few particles of Harlem Stride Piano but all of it filtered, not as direct quotations; they have made it their own. What we notice is their immense trust in each other. While they hone their craft on Monk, its always in the knowledge that the crucial spark does not light up in the notes but between them.
