The brilliant dynamism of Italian Baroque music is at its most virtuosic and thrilling in works featuring the solo trumpet, whether in original compositions or transcriptions. Albinoni’s astonishing ornamentations and the luminous dexterity of Vivaldi’s concerto both represent each composer’s distinctive character, heard alongside works by Corelli, Grossi, Zipoli, Baldassare and Torelli. Domenico Sarri’s Sinfonia a 5 is heard here in its world premiere recording. Thomas Reiner is an acknowledged exponent of this repertoire with his performance of German Baroque Trumpet Concertos (Naxos 8.551419) described as ‘first rate and spirited… an excellent protagonist’ by Fanfare magazine.

Italian Baroque Music Edition [10CDs] (2011)
EAC | FLAC | Image (Cue & Log) ~ 2,40 Gb | Total time: 09:47:51 | Scans included
Classical | Label: Deutsche Harmonia Mundi | # 88697974502 | Recorded: 1984-2001

The recordings are typical DHM with superb clarity and dynamic range. The mastering to digital is excellent, and the booklet accompanying the series, while brief, is informative. The only unifying these here is baroque Italian composers, but it's extremely easy to fill a collection ten times this size with material from that category. What we end up with in these ten discs is a lovely mix of known and unknown, each pleasant to listen to and discover, and there's no listener fatigue at all working through these discs.

Charivari Agreable perform a collection of overtures from the Italian Baroque Opera, best described by director Kah-Ming Ng as lucidly crafted for the purpose of turning heads. In a decadent era when the theatregoers antics were often as intriguing as the on-stage performances, these works were composed to thrill, beguile and engage a distracted audience. Charivari Agreable represent a new and very exciting phase of the early music revival, one that enriches the existing repertory and can bring us ever closer to the spirit of the original music.

The works that are featured on the present recording were all written during an extremely fertile period in the history of the mandolin. Complex and varied, the Baroque age set out to explore new means of expression and, first and foremost, novel timbres. The inventive inquisitiveness of Baroque musicians took them in the direction of the subtlest of sonorities, and no sound was more subtle than that of the mandolin. This was a time when aesthetic concerns were dominated by research into tone colour and into achieving greater and greater refinement.

Ambleto is a fascinating curiosity in music history: a baroque libretto by Apostolo Zeno on the legend of Hamlet, not based on Shakespeare's tragedy but on its primary source, the Gesta Danorum by Saxo Gramaticus. This swashbuckling drama has been first set to music by Francesco Gasparini (Venice 1705) - whose version served as the basis for a pasticcio (London 1712) with arias by various composers including Handel - then by Domenico Scarlatti (Rome 1715) and Giuseppe Carcani (Venice 1743). The surviving arias from these lost operas are brought back to life by the Concert de l'Hostel Dieu and the charismatic soprano Roberta Mameli, who lends her supple voice to the titular Danish Prince and to the strong women around him, his courageous lover Veremonda (Shakespeare's Ophelia) and his tormented mother Gerilda (Gertrude).

The decades around 1600 bore witness to the flourishing of a remarkable musical tradition: the art of diminution, in which simple melodies were given exquisitely virtuosic embellishments, effectively creating new works…
