Sir Francesco Paolo Tosti (1846-1916) was considered one of the most brilliant artists of his era in the late 19th and early 20th centuries in many European countries. The popularity and respect Tosti enjoyed not only in the musical community can be demonstrated by the fact that in 1909, as the third artist in the history of music, he was honored with the title of the Commander of the Royal Victorian Order along with the right to use the title sir before his name. Nowadays, Tostis works are enjoying a well-deserved revival, also in Poland. All thanks to excellent bass-baritone Stanislaw Daniel Kotlinski who together with pianist Marco Balderi decided to record both the most popular and less known compositions of Sir Francesco Paolo Tosti.

The OSI has been making their presence felt on the European music scene with performances that are both innovative and persuasive. The OSI has two main performing venues: one at the Sala Teatro LAC, where it is resident orchestra and performs with leading international artists; the other at the Auditorio Stelio Molo RSI in Lugano, which provides a performing space for different kinds of musicians with distinctive repertoires.

Rethinking a masterpiece. The Art of Fugue is both Johann Sebastian Bach’s opus summum and last complete work, presumably undertaken between 1740 and 1742. According to the frontispiece, the work’s original title actually read DIE KUNST DER FUGA, notably featuring the Latin (or Italian) word fuga rather than German Fuge - as found, instead, in the two printed editions of 1751 and 1752. Die Kunst der Fuga (KdF hereafter), in the form and the order presented in the Berlin Autograph, has all the appearance of a finished work featuring 14 fugues and canons, all based upon a single original theme, serving as the work’s foundation and with the individual pieces progressing in an increasing order of difficulty and contrapuntal perfection.

Isabella, the mischievous Italian prisoner of clumsy and libidinous sultan Mustafà, was probably THE role of Marilyn Horne’s career, on which she indelibly left her mark with her unique mezzo voice and remarkable acting skills. Claudio Scimone’s lively rendition of this exuberant opera is an absolute reference thanks to Horne’s energy, and the surrounding cast is equally brilliant, notably Kathleen Battle and Samuel Ramey.

Beautifully balanced, marvelously flexible in phrasing and tempo, with much well-judged space in the phrasing. In addition there is lots of variety in the playing style, with many touches of lightness and humour. The recorded quality is also of the best: everything is crystal-clear all the time, though always favoring the often jaw-dropping performances of the Norwegian/English/Croatian lutenist Jadran Duncumb.Listeners are spoilt for choice in this music, but what makes this new recording stand out, apart from the striking excellence of the recorded sound, is the nimble playfulness of Duncumb’s lute playing and the warm Italian sun which Rasi and friends shine upon Dowland’s inspiration.
