Named after the rough and ready bars where labourers gathered to drink and dance, barrelhouse was a raucous form of piano blues that got the juke joints swinging. From early pioneers such as Cow Cow Davenport and Speckled Red to the boogie-woogie legends Pete Johnson and Albert Ammons, this collection charts the rise and incredible influence of this good-time blues.

"The Payback" is the 37th studio album by American musician James Brown. The album was released in December 1973, by Polydor Records. It was originally scheduled to become the soundtrack for the blaxploitation film Hell Up in Harlem, but was rejected by the film's producers, who dismissed it as "the same old James Brown stuff." (A widely repeated story - including by Brown himself - that director Larry Cohen rejected the music as "not funky enough" is denied by Cohen). It went to #1 on the Soul Albums chart for two weeks and cracked the Pop Albums chart in the Top 40. It was Brown's only studio album to be certified Gold. "The Payback" is considered a high point in Brown's recording career, and is now regarded by critics as a landmark funk album.

While it boasts neither the landmark status of the two Live at the Apollo LP nor the scope and reach of JB's-era documents like Sex Machine or Love Power Peace, Live at the Garden captures James Brown live, and that's really all the recommendation you need. Recorded at New York City's Madison Square Garden in 1967, the album features Brown & His Famous Flames in peak form, delivering feverish, high-energy grooves almost mathematical in their symmetry and precision. The on-stage intensity is directly proportional to the audience frenzy, building to the kind of catharsis only Brown could achieve.

"Hell" is the 41st studio album by American musician James Brown. The album was released on June 28, 1974, by Polydor Records. Yeah this is another fantastic James Brown album from his golden funk age, half of the album is with the JB's, so that meen Isiah "Ike" Oakley, Fred Wesley, Maceo Parker, St. Clair Pinckney, Hearlon "Cheese" Martin, Jimmy Nolen, Fred Thomas and John Morgan or John "Jabo" Starks on drums, yeah the other half is made with some studio musicians as Joe Farrell, Tom Harrell, David Sandborn, Joe Beck, Charlie Brown, Gordon Edwards and Jimmy Madison, but it really doesn't matter who play on the tracks because all the tracks are great funk and even Lyn Collins and Martha Harvin is singing some background vocals with the JB's.

Sex Machine is the 1970 album by James Brown. While promoted as a live album, the applause of some of the tracks were dubbed in during post-production. A few of these songs would become the source of countless hip-hop samples, including "Give It Up Or Turnit A Loose". This CD was released on 23 March, 1993.

Love Power Peace - Live At The Olympia, Paris, 1971 is a 1992 live CD by James Brown. This was the band before Bootsy Collins left to become a part of the P-Funk Empire and this is arguably better than the actual live album Brown released at the time, Revolution Of The Mind. This Paris show was recorded on the 8th of March, 1971.

Cissy street blasted into the French jazz-funk scene with their first eponymous album in 2017; brandishing a repertoire of entirely original compositions that they’ve been performing in festivals ever since. Their music explores “the heart of a heady groove that mixes explosive funk, jubilant solos and ear-catching melodies (…) this is scorching hot music that we’d recommend to all ages, all types of crowds in any season.”

While he's best known as guitarist Brownie McGhee's longtime partner, harmonica ace and vocalist Sonny Terry made many excellent recordings as a solo act, and also recorded with Blind Boy Fuller and others. The 17 songs on this anthology include Terry playing with McGhee's brother Sticks, Pete Seeger, and others, as well as several featuring Terry's biting harmonica and wry leads relating stories of failure, triumph, and resiliency, backed by McGhee's flickering but always audible guitar. The title is a bit misleading, since the earliest date for any session is 1946 (one number), and most are done between 1955 and 1959.

Limited to 5000 copies. Paper sleeve. SAY IT LOUD - I'M BLACK AND I'M PROUD was James Brown's initial album release for 1969, as KING 5-1047 in stereo within a gatefold jacket. It was preceded by A SOULFUL CHRISTMAS and followed by GETTIN' DOWN TO IT, his great jazzy album backed by The Dee Felice Trio. It was also released simultaneously in England, France, Germany and Spain. In 1990 it was available for the first time on CD from Japan, and later had a US release in 1996. That's the version I would recommend, I'm not sure that the Japanese imports have the track info and liner notes in English.
