Great artists can’t help but respond to the world around them, absorbing the tensions, angst and joys vibrating throughout society. At the same time, musicians provide energy for the necessary struggle, “washing away the dust of everyday life,” as drum legend Art Blakey said, describing jazz’s transformative power. This double duty is at the core of pianist Laszlo Gardony's new solo album Serious Play. He created most of the music spontaneously in the studio, with a few soulful reimaginations of beloved standards added, providing a potent reminder that the longtime Berklee College of Music professor is one of jazz’s most emotionally trenchant and melodically inventive solo piano practitioners. His 12th album and 9th recording for Sunnyside, Serious Play is slated for release on July 14, 2017.

The first of 100 tunes in this collection is a 1937 recording of tenor saxophonist Coleman Hawkins and guitarist Django Reinhardt playing Out Of Nowhere. It was recorded two years before Blue Note Records was founded. The taping was done for EMI’s Capitol label’s French division. This is an ominous hint as to the content of the 10-disc “100 Best of Blue Note” box set, which at first glance appears to have all the trimmings of a slick 21st century collection.

This stellar tribute to his late 6-year old daughter Ana Marquez Greene who was murdered in 2012 at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT, is the continuation of his Mack Avenue debut which is a memorial for Ana Jimmy titled Beautiful Life. While Greene’s first recording honored Ana’s “love of singing and reflecting the way Ana lived,” Flowers - Beautiful Life Volume 2 honors her love of dancing while “inviting us into her playful 6-year old world for a while.”
