Arguably the greatest female singer in the history of Jamaican music, Marcia Griffiths first made her mark in the Jamaican music scene with a number of popular singles during the late sixties, before finding international fame in 1970 alongside her long-term friend and sometime collaborator, Bob Andy. Bob & Marcia's uplifting reggae version of Nina Simone's inspiring song, '(To Be) Young, Gifted & Black' hit number 5 in the UK pop chart, with the single proving to be the first of two British chartbusters, with their exuberant interpretation of 'Pied Piper' just missing out on a Top 10 placing the following year.

This is the second collection to bring together many of the visionary producer Clement ‘Sir Coxsone’ Dodd’s early recordings made with Jamaica’s most exciting young artists and musicians who helped define the world of reggae music over the decades following Jamaican Independence. These recordings were made when Sir Coxsone ruled the dancehalls of Kingston in the late 1950s and early 1960s with his number one Downbeat Sound System, where songs were tested out on dub plates at a dance to see a crowd’s reaction the most popular of which were then released commercially. Featuring early material by Roland Alphonso, Don Drummond, Tommy McCook (all of whom would form The Skatalites), Toots & The Maytals, young singers such as Bob Marley & The Wailers, Delroy Wilson and Owen Gray, all captured in their formative days. The music here spans a wealth of styles Jamaican rhythm & blues, jazz, gospel, proto-ska, Rastafarian all of which were drawn upon to create the future sounds of Jamaican reggae that Sir Coxsone and the artists featured would soon create at Studio One, which first opened its doors in 1963.

Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare are simply known all around the world as Sly & Robbie, the Rhythm Twins. Providing the drum and bass backbone for reggae since the early 1970’s (Dunbar on Dave and Ansell Collins album 'Double Barrel', Shakespeare as a member of the Hippy Boys), the pair have played on more records than any other set of Jamaican musicians. Needless to say, as this is a Jamaican Recordings release, the name Bunny ’Striker’ Lee can't be far away, and it turns out that the duo first worked together in Lee's house band the Aggrovators.

The reggae artist with the greatest impact in history, who introduced Jamaican music to the world and changed the face of global pop music. Reggae's most transcendent and iconic figure, Bob Marley was the first Jamaican artist to achieve international superstardom, in the process introducing the music of his native island nation to the far-flung corners of the globe. Marley's music gave voice to the day-to-day struggles of the Jamaican experience, vividly capturing not only the plight of the country's impoverished and oppressed but also the devout spirituality that remains their source of strength. His songs of faith, devotion, and revolution created a legacy that continues to live on not only through the music of his extended family but also through generations of artists the world over touched by his genius.

Reggae / Dub

There's a heady brew of talent going on here – Phillip Smart at the mixing deck, The Aggrovators providing the rhythms, and Bunny Lee mixing the whole thing down at King Tubby's – all for a massive serving of echo-heavy Jamaican dub from the 70s! The tracks here are awash in cool instrumental touches – lots of organ lines from Jackie Mittoo and Winston Wright, bubbling basslines from Robbie Shakespeare and Aston Barrett, and sweet riffing guitar from Chinna Smith and Alva Lewis – but the special focus here is on the way that Smart can capture all these sounds individually, with a crispness that points the way towards the digital dub generation, and which gives a really deep sense of texture to the final dubs. CD features four more bonus tracks too!

This album pairs "Latin Goes Ska" and "The Birth of Ska," two essential works in the history of ska. Enjoy a veritable treasure trove of Jamaican music, brimming with the creativity and energy of Jamaican music. "Latin Goes Ska" begins with "Latin Goes Ska" by Tommy McCook & The Skatalites. Released in 1964 on Duke Reid's prestigious Treasure Isle label, this pioneering album blends Jamaican ska with the rhythms and melodies of Latin American music, and continues to captivate music fans to this day. Leader Tommy McCook was a saxophonist who returned to the United States after a stint in jazz. His influence is evident throughout the album, with sophisticated horn arrangements and jazzy improvisations seamlessly blended with the upbeat, flowing Latin groove. This cross-cultural blend truly demonstrates the richness of the ska genre. Furthermore, this album features the talented members of the Skatalites. Popular singers such as Justin Hines & the Dominoes and Clive & Naomi also appear as guests, adding a diverse range of textures to the album. The Skatalites were at the peak of their creative potential at the time, and their energy and skill are clearly evident on this album.
