The young but already great saxophonist James Carter explores seven jazz standards with pianist Craig Taborn (himself a young master capable of playing in several styles), bassist Jaribu Shahid, and drummer Tani Tabbal. Among the most versatile and knowledgeable of today's saxophonists, Carter draws on many top stylists during these lengthy solos, yet always sounds quite individual. His violent depiction of a train whistle on "Take the 'A' Train" perfectly launches that romp, and he also really stretches out on "Epistrophy," plays the blues on John Coltrane's "Equinox," and shows quite a bit of fire on "Oleo." A very stimulating session.

On the 23rd September 2023, a stunning and unique concert took place which saw the first performance by any incarnation of Barclay James Harvest with a symphony orchestra to take place in UK since 1973. Joining JLBJH for this memorable concert was The Slaithwaite Philharmonic Orchestra, arranged and conducted by Benjamin Ellin.

Craig Taborn was recently hailed by DownBeat as “one of the visionaries of the current wave”. His unique perspective on creative music-making has established him as a pioneer of jazz. Produced by Manfred Eicher, Chants finds its own response to the vast tradition of piano trios. It channels the special skills of drummer Gerald Cleaver and bassist Thomas Morgan. The ensemble shares an appreciation for compositional shapes and multi-layered improvisational details, as the music is pulled between the poles of density and spaciousness, to dramatic and thrilling effect.

Keyboardist Craig Taborn’s Daylight Ghosts is his third ECM release as a leader, a quartet album following acclaimed solo and trio recordings. In addition to Taborn on piano and electronic keyboards and drummer Dave King, the quartet features two New York jazz luminaries, reed player Chris Speed and bassist Chris Lightcap. Each member draws from a broad artistic background, as informed by rock, electronica and diverse strains of world music as by the various permutations of jazz improvisation. The Bell features dynamic chamber music compositions written for masterful improvisers. The best thing I caught all weekend, said critic Peter Margasak of the 2014 New York Winter Jazzfest, was a superb trio led by drummer Ches Smith with pianist Craig Taborn and violist Mat Maneri, which expertly infused seductively narcotic writing with a mixture of brooding melody and rich texture.
