The album reached #1 on the Billboard album chart in September 1975, and sold 1.9 million copies in the United States. "At Seventeen" was released as a single and reached #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #1 on the Adult Contemporary chart. This is Janis Ian's second album from her re-emergence in the early to mid-'70s as one of the genre's most inspired and original singer/songwriters. While this title houses Ian's biggest international hit, the confessional "At Seventeen," the entire effort combines her honest and confessional lyrics with an equally engaging blend of pop/rock and definite jazz and blues. She assembled much of the same ensemble that had worked on her previous long-player, Stars (1975), and much of the material retains the same warmth and intimacy in both her craft as well as the presentation.

Released in tandem with Janis Ian's autobiography, Society's Child, this best-of compilation collects all the songs mentioned in the book, as well as several rarities. Ian's first demo, a distorted lo-fi version of "Hair Of Spun Gold," makes a welcome appearance, while "Ginny The Flying Girl" arrives via a 1981 Sesame Street album. Also notable are the handful of re-recorded songs on this two-disc collection, as well as several live tracks. Perhaps this isn't the definitive Janis Ian anthology for casual fans – it's too specialized for that – but Ian enthusiasts should make it a staple of their collections.

On Aftertones, Janis Ian (guitar/piano/vocals) continued the artistic, and to a lesser extent, the commercial success she garnered on her previous effort Between The Lines (1975). Once again, she assembled some of the finest session musicians from the Big Apple to animate her intimately sensitive sonic portraits and caricatures. Although Ian would not surpass the universality of "At Seventeen," much of this disc continues the theme and moods expressed as far back as Stars (1974). Ian's advanced folk sensibilities are emotional progressions away from the weepy and introspective nature heard from her mid-'70s singer/songwriter contemporaries.

Janis Ian is a singer and songwriter whose career has gone through three distinct stages. Ian had an initial burst of fame as a teenager with a precocious gift for social and political commentary, as documented on her self-titled 1967 debut album and its hit single "Society's Child. She returned to the public eye in the mid-'70s with deeply personal songs about life and relationships; this era was launched with the albums Stars (1974) and Between the Lines (1975), and a track from the latter album, "At Seventeen," would become her best-known song. In 1993, after ten years away from the spotlight, Ian re-emerged as an independent artist whose comeback album, Breaking Silence (1993), fused a mature viewpoint on the world around her to an urgent and confident lyrical voice. In each stage of her career, Ian's lyrics were literate and emotionally honest, even at the age of 14 (when she penned "Society's Child"), and her vocals have a warmth that reflects strength and vulnerability with equal eloquence.

Notwithstanding one or two isolated exceptions, it wasn’t until the mid-Sixties that independent female voices really began to be heard within the music industry. The feminist movement naturally coincided with the first signs of genuine musical emancipation. In North America, Joan Baez and Buffy Sainte-Marie emerged through the folk clubs, coffee-houses and college campuses to inspire a generation of wannabe female singers and musicians with their strong, independent mentality and social compassion, while the British scene’s combination of folk song revival and the Beatles-led pop explosion saw record company deals for a new generation of pop-folkies including Marianne Faithfull, Dana Gillespie and Vashti Bunyan.
